Churchill Gun Carrier

Post by splash »

in 1941 the Army were looking at ways to upgun their tanks, the outcome was the fitting of ex naval 3in guns onto the Churchill tank running gear in a fixed casement configuration. Unfortunately by the time they had designed and built the Churchill Gun Carriers other more successful designs like the Firefly and Archer had the more effective 17 pounder fitted, so the need for the slower less effective Churchill disappeared and the few that were built finished up as training vehicles never seeing action.

Several of the remaining, finished life as targets out on the gun ranges, but unfortunately none survived in one piece, although Bovington Tank Museum has recovered a couple of the hulks.

This build was part of the Blitz GB using the Plastic Soldiers Churchill as the base and scratch building the rest.

Britain's answer to the German Sturmhaubitze or Russian ISU-122 or 152. Obviously the designer had not heard of slopped armour plate! I seem to remember one of these on the Army ranges up north somewhere in the UK in 1980s

Great model BTW

This is a great conversion, Alan, especially so considering it was done as a blitzbau!

Perhaps because they were using ex-Naval 3inch guns they thought they had to make it look like a battleship :-D

To be fair due to its slab sides it’s a simple conversion and the Plastic Soldier kit is almost a snap fit kit, low part count but good detail, so great for blitzing.

If I had started with the Airfix Churchill it would have taken a lot longer.
