Airfix 1/76 StuG III Ausf G

Post by ntrocket88 »

This was the first kit I completed two years ago after my long (long) break from modeling. Although I have improved a little since, I felt it deserved some new photos. Despite being one of the oldest Airfix AFV kits, it is still a good model. Most of it's sins are ones of omission, rather than commission, so it is not too tough to produce an accurate result.

I believe the only fundamental dimensional error is the weedy gun barrel so I swapped it with one cut from an Airfix PaK40 (you can never have too many Opel Blitz). This was my first attempt at using a Dremel to produce 1/76 Zimmerit. It was also my last attempt to use my old airbrush on 1/76 models. Not happy with the result (again) so I bought a new one for the next kit. I scratch built the following details:
On the front: Notek light and I carved off the appliqué cement armor on the front roof either side of the gun mount.
On the superstructure roof: Nahverteidigungswaffe and Remote Control MG with new Loader's hatch rotated 90 deg
On the rear: Engine crank start cover and crank handle and the exhaust heat shield
On the sides: Schurzen with fiddly brackets and I drilled out all the wheel holes.

Excellent Neil, I love the additional work that you put into these little AFV's. Now I'm back from my hols I'll try and get my Comet finished to give you a laugh!
