MMS 1/76 Daimler Armoured Car Mk 1

Post by ntrocket88 »

I finally finished this today. Having several of these to make for wargaming purposes, I had decided to make two at the same time. That worked up past weathering and pin washing but then I got distracted and only finished one. The other has had to wait several months just to have the guns and turret searchlight added and some stowage. Both white-metal kits are built pretty much as supplied. I added Milicast stowage to both and added the Aeriel's using bristles from a household paintbrush. I was also inordinately pleased with the scratch-built shovel. The finish is my usual Humbrol mix for British SCC2 with MIG Pigments supplying the mud. Anyway, here are both of them, with todays effort first:

Another pair of great models from your production line Neil, nicely painted, weathered and photographed. I also like the shovel - how did you make it?

I cut the blade from thin Evergreen sheet and gripped it in the middle with round-nosed pliers. I then gently bent it to either side. That created the curve and as a bonus (more by luck than judgement...) the pliers made a perfect central indent for the handle, made from thin Evergreen rod.

Very nicely done indeed. Is there a trick to get the mud in the tracks rather that all over the tires?

Actually, there is! This was my first attempt at using MIG pigments and I used three different techniques based on u-tube videos I found. On other models I have laboriously painted mud in the treads...

Specifically for the wheels, I mixed three MIG mud/dust pigments together with water and then slathered the slurry all over the tires (tyres) and hubs. When the water dried out, I brushed the wheels with a moderately stiff brush to remove the excess powder from the tire surface and most of the tire walls. When I was happy with the amount of powder left, I sprayed them with matte lacquer to fix. Could have also used the MIG fixing solution too. I used the same method to deposit mud/dust in the nooks and crannies of the body and turret. The Daimler A/C is perfect for nooks and crannies, even though these ones are not much bigger than a quarter (10p sized coin)!

I used a different method to apply mud to the underside of the mudguards and main body. For that, I mixed three mud pigments dry and separately mixed white glue, matte lacquer and water. I dipped a paintbrush in the glue and then into the powder and dabbed it on, adding additional layers with progressively more 'dry' and less 'wet' to leave a multicolored, textured effect.

The last effect was just to brush the dust pigment on dry, again fixing with airbrushed matte lacquer.
