Tom's Skybirds DH Hornet **Finished**
Welcome intrepid entemologists to the lair of a rare and unusual beast; the de Havilland Hornet
Here we see the young insect still in its egg:
A closer inspection reveals:
Two bags of white metal castings
One bag of injected parts
A pre-cut vac canopy
One set of concise written instructions
Decals and colour schemes
Plenty to keep me busy here
Regards
Tom

Re: Tom's Skybirds DH Hornet
And we're off, after spending the day at work positively itching to get started I have spent my afternoon carefully reading and following the instructions to the absolute letter, there will be no deviating during this build
We start by cleaning up the fuselage halves and cementing the area around the cockpit only:
Looks like some serious warpage doesn't it however the plastic is both brittle and flexible so both halves can be joined together without resorting to hot water, but this is a later step down the line.
Next I need to paint the cockpit and install it into the fuselage from below. And what a cockpit the kit provides :
5 pieces in white metal with some astonishing detail, check out the throttle quadrants and rudder bar:
amazing when you consider this is a 25 year old short run kit.
Some of the plastic parts are quite rough however:
and the fit leaves a little to be desired straight from the box:
but ten minutes per side with a file and sandpaper gives a convincing improvement:
More as it comes gentlemen.
Regards
Tom

Don't think that I have ever seen a Skybirds kit being built - really looking forward to seeing this develop and very much liking the way it is panning out so far...
Please critique my posts honestly i.e. say what you think so I can learn and improve...

Re: Tom's Skybirds DH Hornet
Ran into my first hurdle last night as I was test fitting the IP, it appears that Humbrol liquid poly isn't man enough to bond the kits' plastic parts together I thought that this was going to de-rail my build progress for a few days until I remembered the tube of 'proper' poly cement that a family member had put into my Crimbo stocking last year . I'd promised to never touch the stringy stuff again but needs must, and it's done a great job!
Just goes to show how much modern modelling materials have been diluted by 'elf and safety, the kit instructions call for MEKpak for gluing purposes but even that doesn't contain MEK any more
Anyways I digress, small progress steps today with the IP in place and painted:
Seat and bulkhead assembly together and first stage painted:
I've also carried on with part cleanup and am attempting something new for this build in the shape of a harness. The instructions say this was blue with a gold clasp, so I have painted some Tamiya tape in Hu96 and am waiting for it to dry:
Next is to cut and attach the harness and fit the seat/bulkhead.
Regards
Tom

Re: Tom's Skybirds DH Hornet
The Hornet is a lovely looking aircraft. I have to say that I've never heard of Skybirds but this looks to be an interesting build. I use tube glue quite often, Revell usually, despite the occasional bit of stringing, because it gives a good strong join where liquid poly often doesn't. I don't go a bundle on that "never use it directly out of the tube" stuff either, just be careful!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.
