The Flute & Basket -- Sign-up and Chat
Welcome to the 'Airacobra' single-type GB where any scale or boxing of the P-39 (and P-400) is allowed.
This is a continuation of the initial 'P-39 GB' thread from GB Chat.
Here toodle your flute, make your 'cobra' rise from the basket and onto your workbench, tell others how to charm an Airacobra ....
Your GB Leader is Brews, who will post any additional details here shortly ....

I would love to do the aircraft pictured on the box. I think the P-39 looks great in blue and white alas mine will be OD and white (As of right now)

Probably, i will be one of yours.
I'm looking for italian co-belligerant decals now (thanks Brews for the idea).
Not sure yet about the kit... i have a Heller... maybe an Airfix... I'm looking for a good choise.
Stay tuned !

If the only significant visual difference between the Q-model and the D-model is the armament then I might be tempted. I have the Airfix Q, less the windscreen which I may have a Falcon solution for. It'll give me practice filling the underwing pod canyons and a perfect excuse to wipe out all the rivets.Brews wrote:....

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Thanks a lot ! Have just find a solution...Brews wrote:I have the markings you seek in 1:48 scale. Does that help? If you go 1:72, then the Heller is better than the Airfix. I *might* have some spare 1:72 Co-Belligerant Air Force markings, but they won't be specifically for the P-39 (more likely a Macchi or Fiat)kruaxi wrote:Probably, i will be one of yours.

Re: The Flute & Basket -- Sign-up and Chat
This is going to be a very interesting build for me - I've been absolutely itching to try one of my P-39 or P-63 kits for ages - now I can do both!
Small quibbles? Well, the Frog kit isn't any particular variant as far as I can see - I seem to recall it was a bit of a mish mash of types to accommodate the decal sheet (RAF & USAAF) and I'm concerned about getting the bits and pieces to all fit (this was intended to be a real showcase build for me, hence the AM stuff).
On the plus side, the Frog kit is generally reckoned to be a pretty good representation of the P-39. Barring the Academy kit (sorry, not a bit Academy fan - I find them a bit soulless as models), it seems to score highly against the Airfix, Revell and Heller offerings! Truly a pity it never went mainstream!
The P-63? Hmmm. It's Polish made, moulded in thick and I mean thick, white plastic tons of flash, mould wear, dodgy canopies (may need a lesson in vacforming... or send the canopy to someone who can)... you name it, it's got it, in spades! Still, good decals though, so that's OK then!
I saw it, saw how horrid it was, and fell in love! As the man said... I predict a riot!

I will do the Monogram P-39 in one of it's many releases. I think a Russian bird on this go around.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

If a friend can come through with a Falcon canopy then I'll do a (very quick & dirty) 601 Sqn P-39D from the Airfix kit. Should know by Tuesday or Wednesday.jRatz wrote:If the only significant visual difference between the Q-model and the D-model is the armament then I might be tempted. I have a Squadron set - see build thread pics. Do you want a spare? There's two in the set including door glazing...jRatz wrote:If a friend can come through with a Falcon canopy then I'll do a (very quick & dirty) 601 Sqn P-39D from the Airfix kit. One correction Bruce. I'm doing a USAAF bird not a Soviet.
