OT's 'Bellochka' ***Done***

Post by Old_Tonto »

I am in with this Academy 1/72 P-39Q which I hope will turn out as the mount of Mariinskiy.

Image

It should turn out like this except for the blue circles around the fuselage stars - they are bogus.

Image

Never built this kit but at first glance it looks like a real gem. Should make a pleasent change for me.

It will be straight OOB as time is short so my lunch times for the next few weeks are now full. Can't wait to start.

Nice choice. Those Academy kits are usually pretty nice. I look forward to seeing it built

Lunchtime build ... good luck with that!
It's the only option I have at the minute as the attic room where I usually slap plastic together is full of crap from the recently decorated bedroom. SWAMBO thinks the bedroom "looks so much bigger now it's been painted." Nothing to do with the dozen or so boxes & Tequila chest that have migrated upstairs then!
:boom:
Anyway moan over. Some spru shots to start (apologies for the quality - using my phone):

Two canopies for some reason.

I have just applied the first coat of interior green - Humbrol Matt 226. A decent looking cockpit OOB although I have just noticed that Academy have molded the throttle lever on both doors. I will just paint a few details in the pit as we only have four weeks - definately OOB on this one baring the decals which will be a combonation of the kit & spares.

Will try to post some images later. :smilie_flagge3:

Just the white number 4 which is quite prominent on the nose of the Kobra I am doing an possibly the red stars on top of the wings. The kit ones have a red out line beyond the white outline (does that make sense?). Although not all VVS Kobras had them markings on the upper wing surfaces!

See - you learn something every day. 8-)

Progress so far. Made a start on the office area:

Image

Just painted it green then highlighted some details black & red as shown in reference photos. Not sure how much will be seen once its all closed up.
And the door is a seperate clear piece:
Image

Image

The seat looks a little bare so I am currently adding a cushion made from blutak and some harness cut from Tamiya tape.

I filled in the machinegun ejection ports on the wing with Tippex as they are not needed for the Q model.

Image

I am also leaving off the .50 cal gun packs as they are not fitted to Myrinskiiy's Kobra.
I hope to get the IP in & cockpit together so I can add weight to the front fuselage before closing it up.

Looks to be a nice little kit, I am about the same stage as you at the moment although I would imagine that you will soon be way ahead as I can't get started for real until Thursday.

I must say it really is a great little kit. The fuselage halves are together now with no dramas and a dry fit of the wings suggests that I won't need any filler. :-D

I am trying to get as much done straight off as I can as life has a habit of obstructing my model making.

This is where I stand at the moment:

Fuselage halves are done and plenty of weight added.

I hope this is enough as I can't squeeze any more in. Lets hope the U\C leg can take the strain!

I wonder if you could use bee propolis? That stick to anything. This could be a lightbulb moment. We need a new smillie.

Sorry, I can't help myself :)

What we want the u/c leg to do is take the load (force) without buckling. Strain is expressed as the percentage of the deformation divided by the original length (e.g. if the oleo sunk by 10mm and the unloaded strut length was 1m, then strain is 1%).

I beg your pardon for this interruption - back to your kit now :-D

Edit: strain percentage corrected. I'll blame it on the k/b.
Actually "stress" or "strain", whichever works, is what causes one to want to choke the *** out of some 'know-it-all'

Forget the smilie, I need to look up "Bee propolis". I have to say, it sounds nasty!
It's the sticky stuff the bees use to glue bits of the hive together & bung up any holes. SWAMBO keeps bees (until last week when they swarmed  ),
so I have access to plenty.

Todays jobs:
  • Mask the canopy
    Tail planes on
Test fit the U\C to see if it's a tail sitter

Not gotten much done of late. Work & life getting in the way.

The canopy is on and proving a little tricky to mask (it's the old eyes you see!). Lots of curves on a cobra canopy frame. :???:

I have also assembled & painted the U\C & prop. Pics as soon as I have something to show.

Nice one OT and good to see her standing as nature intended and not sitting on her behind. The curved radio (I had to stop myself from typing "parcel" then) shelf issue with some of these kits is a bit of a bind is it not. Mind you, will it be all that noticeable once the canopy is on and the frames painted?
