Fangs for the collective good.

The Monogram P-39 in 1/48th. Still a good kit after all these years. The Russians called it the "Flying Can Opener"

Pics to follow.

OK. I am hoping that this kit will bring me out of a serious modeling funk. As I remember it was just the ticket before.

Box art:

One of many reincarnations.

Innards: I really think there is two kits in there.

Image

Deckels: A rather hodge podge of stuff here.

So we are off and crawling.

I built that, long time ago, but I'll be darned if I can remember what color scheme ....

I'm starting to get nostalgic over the old Monograms and I really don't need that ...

Work is progressing. If you have never built this kit before it is an aged to perfection Monogram kit. One of the first in their 1/48th series where they did away with "working" features and settled into details and better accuracy. It is a mix of raised and recessed panel lines. Along with the Typhoon, one of their best efforts. I think this was Bill Koster all the way. The only flaw I would mention was on the decal sheet. The personal marking of Hell's Bells was proven in error with photographs as a typo. It should read Hell's Bell

Time to start thinking about interior color. I will not waste time debating Bell interior green and the other shades. It is time to put paint to plastic.

Glad to see this one being built Jeff as I have just got one myself, it's not a bad kit at all.

Settled on Polly Scale Vietnam Medium green this time around. Now the fun part of post shading and washing and dry brushing.

Lots of detail to show off. Part of an old Micro Scale sheet that I have for P39's have instrument panels but I think the dry brushing is the way to go here.

Interesting report, Brews on Russian P-39's. Tank busting was not it's primary function apparently. Good reading.

Mark, the other P-47 shot is way blurry. It is indeed an M painted like a Gabby's D model. Impressive none the less.

Won't be long now and I'll start slapping this thing together. I saw it fly at Oshkosh one year before it was retired to museum status.

Online translators are all fine and dandy, but not always to be trusted. My wife is a foreign language teacher and has experience from some of her pupil's efforts! I suppose if any of the members on here who can understand Russian complain at the use of rude words on a public forum, we know that is another online translator not to be trusted

Valid points. Our Baris Tansoy told me he speaks better English than Google Translator translates Turkish. Oh well, all in fun. If things heat up we have the Cold War thread elsewhere to cover it.

My girls packed both cameras for a weekend in the woods. So no pictures. Maybe I should take the model into the woods. But you can trust me more than the translator.

Fuselage is together and wings attached. Again, for the age, one of Monograms best. The build is progressing nicely but I don't know at what percent. Possibly 50%. Anyway, it is a great cure to builders block.

This kit is just what I needed. The American Red Cross are deploying to Florida (flooding) Colorado (fire) and possibly Montana (fire) to name a few but due to the fact that I just got off deployment there may not be another for a while. Looks like a long summer for some.

This morning the horzontal stabs were added before work. Ballast added to the nose and the gun bay hatch set in place. I really hate to close this area up because Monogram provides great detail but to weight the nose, not much choice.

My choice of markings is hard to track down. At a show recently I purchased a grab bag of decal scraps in which my subject was included. Searching the net, it is quite possibly an Aeromaster sheet.

Next photo op will nclude the picture of the sheet and maybe someone in the know can help ID it.

So I am at 51.999% for the score keepers.

I have seen any number of dioramas with a 55-gal drum conveniently under the tail of a P-39 ....

The drum technique is widely used but in this case the fuselage was packed with double-0 buckshot.

So as I was saying. Most of the construction is done. Fit is pretty good except the removable hatches.

Image

Here is the instrument panel. Missed the "out of focus" due to my bifocals.

Image

Now here is the partial decal sheet. I am thinking it is Aeromaster but could be Cutting Edge. Any thoughts?
