John's being funny ... * * * Finished * * *

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

My blitz kit will be either the Matchbox Churchill AVRE or the Airfix Sherman Crab, leaning toward the AVRE ....
I will do the usual pix when I make my final choice ....

Start date is TBD, I have an ugly calendar this month ....

Great stuff, another AFV build and potentially a Matchbox one too. I will look forward to this and hopefully your build will not coincide with my holidays at the end of the month. The AVRE will be an interesting choice but which ever you go with it will be nice to see another tank.

Either build will be good to watch. Looking forward to following the build John.

Brews, the Airfix Bridgelayer is the post-war version of the final type of bridgelayer based on the mark VII with the wider bridge whereas the Matchbox/Revell kit is a wartime mark IV AVRE with the original type of Single Girder Bridge carried as originally designed.
Check out "The Funnies" by F.W. Futter, published by Bellona for details, history and 1/76 scale plans of all three transport/deployment layouts.
1/76 scale Plans for the wartime mark IV version of the later Bridgelayer can be found in Bellona military Vehicle Prints Volume 25.

The Matchbox 1/76 scale Churchill AVRE kit OOB in its original configuration.

David, thanks for those pictures - great looking models !

I have the "79th Armoured Division Final Report 1945" (reprint). The pix aren't copied/printed well, but it contains several drawings of the AVRE/SBG and your models help clarify both the scissors and trailered SBG for me, as they both caught my eye. I also saw an AVRE designed to push a Bailey Bridge into place and that gives me yet another to put on my to-do list.

Looks like the bar is set pretty high for this blitz.

Do not mis-understand; mine will be OOB - those others are future consideration.

OK, as I said earlier, I have an ugly calendar this month, but I believe I will start Tuesday mid-morning (EDT) / mid-afternoon (GMT) -- after a meeting that may or may not change my plans/schedule. I should start about 10am EDT, more or less ....

 Dare I ask who's miss August?

Good luck with the build John. I'll be watching with interest. I could do with tips on doing tanky type things.

All the best.

1200 21 August: 0 down, 24 to go.

OK, starting now.

Our victim.

85 parts, including the terrain piece which I'll not use, but not including the 20gr weight to offset the SBG and the twine I'll need to rig it. Still, it really isn't very complex given that I don't have to fiddle with individual road wheels ala Airfix ….

Image

Any Blitz requires a plan, key elements to me are to identify those steps which must take place sequentially, those that can be done in parallel to get ahead, and those that require extra effort/drying to be ready for the next step. So, the plan ….

1. Spray track with rattle-can Tamiya Light Gun Metal, set aside to dry.
Spray all 3 sprues front & back with WEM SCC15, set aside to dry.
Clean airbrush, recharge air tank, kill time until paint has had an hour or so to dry (I tested this before).

2. Assembly steps:
A. #7:- glue track together, clamp and set aside; do some washes/rust to dull & highlight.
B. #10-13: black wash over springs, rub pencil over road wheels; assemble.
C. cut all SBG parts from sprue & clean up; set aside neatly.
D. #14-15; clean any seams/gaps; let dry
E. #8-9, #16-17; clean seams/gaps, set aside to dry.
F. #19: first gluing in weight & allowing to dry (skip #18, can do with #20)
G. #20: glue 3,4,14 to front hull, clamp & set aside to dry so no problems when bridge mounted.
H. #1-6: build the SBG, clean gaps/seams, respray where needed, mild weathering, dullcoat
I. do left-overs from 18-20, clean, respray, mild weathering, let dry
J. decals, dull coat, let dry
K. #21: mount the SBG, do the rigging; attempt to make crank work.
L. Tidy up.

I'm sorry this is so sketchy, as I said the meeting ran Loooonnnnggg ….
Ipod is charged with bluegrass, cajun/zydeco, oldies, folk, etc … and playing.
Coffee cup is full, Kermit is clock-watching ….

This will be done in two-blocks, the senior option, with unplanned intervals for real world annoyances …

And, yes, you may see stray Telford projects in these pix ….

And I'm off to do Step 1.
