OT does a "Flitzer" ***Defeated by life***

Post by Old_Tonto »

This is my subject this time around:

Image

Never built this kit before so have no idea if it's a pig or a gem. Probably not the best choice for a Blitz then! :???:

On the plus side, as the real thing never flew the paint scheme is my choice. If time is running out it could be natural metal with big Swaztikas. I am aiming for a four coloured splinter camo but who knows.

I have done some research this time round so have plenty of drawings, info etc. I am planning an in flight model (saves messing with fiddly bits ) but I have yet to figure out how to mount it and will need to find a pilot figure.

Wifey is working a 12 hour shift tomorrow so I have the kids to look after, there may be the odd interuption. :frown: I am aiming at a 10 a.m. (GMT) start and will see how I get on. I hope some of you can join me (I promise no nudity this time ).

I've got this kit and have considered it for a Blitz ( breaking my Blitz Rule No 1 ), so will watch with interest.

This is my set up for today - it took quite a while to clear the bench. I had better attack the backlog of kits after this Blitzbau.

Time for some scoff and sort the kids out before I start. The batteries have just expired in the camera so you will have to wait for the sprue shots. See you at 10.

Nice one. A German Vampire. Looking forward to this build and that's a neat clock.

All the best.

Thank for the support guys. The clock is borrowed (but I may keep it!)

So here are the spure shots I promissed.
Just two main sprues:

The detail is very nice and judging by the few images I can find of the plans pretty accurate.

And if anyone is intersested the Luft'46 site is worth a look. Some fantastic art work on there. Here is a link to the Flitzer

So it is 10:20 GMT and time to start.

Just realized I don't have an interesting mug to display - I will see what I can do.

The first hour has gone already!

First the History bit:
In March 1943 Focke-Wulf in Bremen initiated a series of design studies for single-seat, jet powered fighters. Entwurf 6, also known as Projekt VI, was approved for mock-up construction in Febuary 1944. The designation was later changed to Projekt VII and was given the code name "Flitzer" (Madcap). The mid-fuselage mounted wings had moderate sweepback (32 degrees), twin booms and a high mounted tailplane. The single He S 011A tubojet was to be supplemented with a Walter HWK 509 A-2 bi-fuel rocket mounted below the jet, although this arrangement was later revised, eliminating the rocket engine. Projected armament consisted of two MK 103 30mm cannon or two MK 108 30mm cannon in the lower nose and two MG 151/20 20mm cannon in the wings. The "Flitzer" was well advanced in development, a full-size mock-up (photos below) and some prototype sub-assemblies being completed. The project was eventually abandoned because, although using only a single turbojet, its performance was no better than the Me 262 which was entering service.

Span: 8.0 m (26' 3.2") Length: 9.8 m (32' 2.1") Max. Speed: 830 km/h (516 mph)

Progress so far, I have a cup of tea, cockpit tub together & painted RLM02 Grau. This choice of colour was a guess as I no nothing about German types.

Image

I have also found a pilot figure from a Revell Luftwaffe set and started work on the wings & jet exhaust.

Image

There are a couple of decals for the side panel & IP. I am hoping to have the fuselage closed up by lunchtime so that I can make a stand for it before I fit the tail booms.

Time to crack on.

Image

Sorry, forgot to post an image of the decals:

The canopy has been dipped in Klear in prep for masking. Is there anybody out there?

I'm here OT (I'm supposed to working though ;-) ) and it looks like a nice kit - nice bit of history too. At the end of the day, it being a Luft 46, there's a lot of leeway regarding how you finish it etc. Looks like a good start you've made there!

This looks very interesting but I cannot follow all the way through as I have to visit my dentist this afternoon but will catch up on my return. (Doctor Who fan mode on:) I like that clock, I want one.

Exciting. I've built a vampire, once. I find them quite unusual.

This looks like a nice kit. Been wanting one for a while now but just haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. I'd like to take this time to nominate you for the best Blitz clock!! That clock rocks.
