Type 45 Destroyers

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

Type 45 Destroyers

Post by Nigel Foster »

Does anyone know what the exact fit is of weapons o these ships at the present time?

Have they had any small calibre weapons fitted for self defence.

Thanks in anticipation for any kind responses.

I think your best bet is to check the Royal navy website, Nigel. Some great photos there as well - very useful for reference.

Basically the Type 45 has a single 4.5" Gun, the Sea Viper Missile System comprising Sylver Vertical Launch System. This launcher has 48 Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles. They have two single 30 mm guns and mini guns. They were fitted with Phalanx CIWS, with two mounts being located in the waist firing to port and starboard. Added to this they have various countermeasures launchers. Each ship is fitted for Harpoon Launchers forward of the bridge. Each ship also carries Lynx or Merlin Helicopters and these have a range of Anti Sub and Anti Surface Vessel weapons.

The ships are large enough to be upgraded with many new weapons in the future. The 4.5" Gun may be replaced with the 155 mm gun. The CIWS may be replaced by the Sea Ram Missile system and they may also deploy Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. The new Lynx Wildcat will also deploy a number of new and up-graded weapons.
So many models, so little time.

Thanks gentlemen for your kind replies, they are both very helpful.

Do you know why the Harpoon has not been fitted. Are there issues over top weight?

Cheers

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply.

So they will all carry it as standard in the near future or will it only be added if there is prospect of conflict?
There is no top weight problem that we are aware of then.

Thanks

Nigel
