HMS Victorious with Air Group

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

HMS Victorious with Air Group

Post by jamesaw »

Finally finished (more or less). I decided to do all the nose numbers as well. Unfortunately, matching these with the appropriate aircraft serials was somewhat problematical as most of the existing photos didn't show both at the same time. If anyone has a definitive list, I'd be grateful. I'm reasonably sure 10 of the Sea Vixens and 4 of the 8 Scimitars are matched correctly, but the others are guesses. The deck crane and handling vehicles were borrowed from the USS Constellation by Italeri in 1/720, but a close inspection of the data plates revealed that they were built in Texas so 1/720 Texas scale equates to 1/600 UK. 2 sets of Victorious aircraft were used and the Whirlwinds and Skyraiders were promptly supplied by Tumbling Dice in the UK. Since these are essentially wargaming items, I enhanced the Whirlwinds with etched brass offcuts for the rotors and reduced the wheel diameter with sliced stretched sprue. Landing gear and props were added to the Skyraiders which coincidentally, have the radome bulge and are actually nice little models.

To be quite honest, I had to use a magnifier as I can barely see most of the bits even with my glasses on. I was happy to see that I managed to get the numbers on the right way up!

Oh wow, that is a great looking Victorious complete with its compliment of aircraft. Mucho patience needed for this one Jamesaw I would imagine. Top work.

Well done. I was sure that either adding the photo etch or painting the aircraft would drive you over the edge but you survived both and the result is terrific.

Thanks guys. Now back to the Dornier 17 that I'd nearly finished before the Group Build hit!

I loved your build of this kit Howard. It's been entertaining and informative with a great result at the end. I'll certainly be using this as reference when I build mine 8-)

Brilliant busy build there - its really good to see great work like this. I can really appreciate the time it must have taken you to replicate all the aircraft and keep the quality of each consistent throughout the build

I know I'm five years late, but that's a cracking good build of Victorious. I have one to restore but am now put off by seeing what you have done. I don't even have any of the aircraft or helicopters! Perhaps should just quietly put it back in box, especially as I see that Airfix are about to reissue it.
