"Trumpeter" battlecruiser HMS Hood in 1:700 scale

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

"Trumpeter" battlecruiser HMS Hood in 1:700 scale

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

Found this kit unbuilt at a local second hand chain store for a quarter what it usually costs here at retail prices. Built out of the box, with rigging made of heat stretched sprue. Enjoy.

Thanks gents. Part wise and parts size wise it is rather more involved than the Airfix kit which I remember fondly. It was indeed a good score, the second 700 scale Trumpeter ship kit I have attempted. I have three more in the stash, all very intriguing as well.......

It's a pretty good kit overall, Andrew. I had a few fit issues, mostly with the seeming unlimited multitude of tiny stairways to who knows where as well as the forecastle and the mainmast, strangely enough. But all those microscopic bits and bobs and the subassemblies add up to a very deep level of detail that rivals the Japanese 700 scale ship kits in every way. I also have Trumpeter's HMS Repulse and HMS Renown, and I bet they will look pretty great too.

I am hoping to tackle it in the upcoming Royal Navy GB. I have the 1930s version, just to be a bit different.

Nice, Andrew. Did Hood carry a catapult and floatplane at that time? I have puzzled for a while as to why it seemed the only capital ship in the Royal Navy that did not carry that equipment into WW2.

Fine work Gnomemeister, that is an excellent job. Hood had great lines, almost like an ocean liner with guns!

Ha ha! Yes, pretty much, eh? I think aesthetics were definitely also on the minds of its designers as much as a projection of British Imperial power for sure.

Two Fairey IIF float planes. I believe that the catapults on the stern were less than successful and were removed.

I think the introduction of radar made the roll of the float plane as an observation tool redundant.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Perhaps, David, but the floatplanes and catapults were removed before radar came along, if I have the chronology right. For a capital ship, Hood looked odd without them.
