SMS Emden

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

Here's my rendition of the SMS Emden from a 1/2400 scale wargame piece from GHQ. No worries about shelf space for this one!

Thanks splash!

The water was pretty simple, just a section cut out from from some artist’s drawing paper intended for watercolors. The thick paper has a delicate, regular texture which makes a reasonable 1/2400 scale dead calm achorage. I cut out several sections, painting each with slightly different combinations of Testors Sea Blue 1172 (small bottle) and Floquil Reefer White. When they dry I glossed them with Future and used the one that turned out best.

After prepping a base swiped from a Revell 1/1200 scale Titanic,

the paper sea was bonded to it and ready for its occupant...

Honey, I shrunk the Emden ! :)

Got to get you a microscope for your camera :)

That appears to be excellent work, I do wish we could appreciate it with a more detailed photo and an explanation of some of your techniques at that scale. Wow !!

Here are a few closer in-progress shots, but at about two inches in length the ship isn't that easy to photograph!

I used the same techniques as with any ship model, just a little smaller - and a bit more Jack Daniel's sour mash to steady the hands!

I'm sorry, you painted the officer's toilets the wrong colour ;-) . Brilliant work- looks much bigger than it is.

And to think I was complaining about working in 1:600 scale.

Thank you for showing us your water base technique, some times the simplest ways are the best.

That is absolutely amazing Tim. Along with Splash I also thought 1/600th scale was annoyingly small but 1/2400th and rigged!!! I doff my cap to you sir!

Thanks - the rigging is small diameter copper wire I salvaged from a coil out of a very old transistor radio I picked up at a thrift store. 1970s high tech!
