Splash's Telford builds

Post by splash »

As part of this years CBK Telford show I'm building a set of RN ships as you can see I'm building 3 Airfix Classic 1:600 scale kits and a Frog 1/500 scale frigate, All are being modified the Belfast is being converted to HMS Southampton, HMS Daring is being updated to her last re-fit state, HMS Warspite is being backdated to her Jutland days and the Frog kit of HMS Torquay is updated to become HMS Plymouth.

The build thread is over on the CBK thread but I will leave updates here.

That's if I stop making school boy errors

List night I added a flat sheet of plastic to the base and today trimmed it to size as I planned to make a resin copy for future builds.

Having already extensively modified the forecastle and removed the side bulges I thought I had finished working on the hull but whilst carry out checks before making a cast I discovered that I had totally overlooked the rear deck, if you look at the photo you can see the Warspite had cutouts just aft of the rear turret on both sides so I'm now going to have to sharpen my blades and do more chopping

It's not as difficult as it looks, the old Airfix soft grey plastic is easy to work with, I mark out the area to be removed, then using a razor saw, cut through the straight lines then score around any curves and simply snap the parts off.

I then trimmed everything to shape using a new blade and filled the void with filler that will be shaped when set.

Having now sorted out the rear deck, I have added the waterline armour that had to be removed when I cut off the original later bulges that the Warspite had fitted during her first big re-fit in 1924-26.

Having now made so many changes I thougt it was time to take the paint work back to basics so I have given it a full blow over with Tamiya grey primer.

Splash, if you decide to re-enter the business, I would like to propose setting up a shipyard. We would build for RN, quality vessels faster than politicians could cancel them! :) I really appreciate the effort.

They all look fantastic. Nice bit of surgery on the Warspite.

That sounds a great idea, I'm really starting to enjoy this ship building lark, but building ships faster than the politicians can cancel them is a tall order :-D

I thought I would do a comparison between what the hull looked like in 1915 and when Airfix produced the kit as she was in 1945.

You can see over the thirty years the deck got wider at the front and rear and several of the guns on the lower deck disappeared, interestingly she also lost two forward and two aft below the waterline torpedo tubes.

I'm now going to atempted to scratch build the rear superstructure as it looks like the easiest to cut my teeth on :-D

I have an excellent set of plans that I have scaled down to 1/600 this makes building the superstructure a lot easier.

Because the superstructure is very slab sided, I found using very thin plastic card the simplist way of construction.
