Splash's Telford builds
Re: Splash's Telford builds
Those upgrades do indeed look good, but they are going to add a lot of expense to the project. They are a bit too rich for my pocket too. Sadly I would have to question what I was doing ... When there are other more accurate kits - albeit 1:700 - as a start point.

Trying to Build kits and not Buy kits
Re: Splash's Telford builds
Hi there
Good to hear back from you and thanks for your feedback. Thanks for posting the pics of the boats from the Repulse kit too, that's a good illustration of why we need replacement parts.
Got a few of those Repulse kits lying around myself.
I appreciate the costs of 3D printing are pretty high right now and it's not for everyone.
The parts are actually printed at Shapeways.com and have 'better than injection molded quality' (16 Microns, so I believe).
As for the accuracy these parts are far more detailed/accurate than any 1/700 and 1/350 parts. Where everything has been painstakingly researched using reference photos and plans.
I often compare modelling to golf as a pastime and the costs and man hours that go along with it. Still making modelling an incredibly cheap pastime.
If I could add up the amount I've spent on brass wire, styrene sheets and tubing for scratch building a £15 kit it would have cost far more than the 3d parts.
Not to mention endless White Ensign Door and Hatches sets! It would have just been cheaper me making the 3d parts in the first place! :-)
I love 1/600 scale and would really love to see some life breathed back into it as I hate going along with the crowd i.e 1/700 etc. It's just too easy :-)
There's so many ships I always wanted to see in this scale and now with 3d printing we have the ability to do that. Must be something to do with being a kiwi and having that 'can do' attitude.
Imagine, a WW1 1/600 HMS Lion, HMS Dreadnought, more destroyers and cruisers even maybe finally a decent 1/600 Bismarck/Tirpitz!. Or conversion sets like a HMS Renown for the Repulse kit.
Personally I can't wait to get cracking on them, 1/600's been neglected for too long now.
Anyway, hopefully some of the parts I'm making can be of help to you and others in the future :-)
I look forward to watching your builds as they progress. Really respect your work and not always trying to take the easy path.
All the best for the show.

Looks great. Good idea to give it a quick spray-it really highlights how successful the surgery was!

Re: Splash's Telford builds
The mother in law has now moved out into her new home so I'm now back at the work bench.
I bought some siligum to make moulds to copy the boats from the HMS Repulse kit and found it very easy to use for moulding small parts in resin, as you can see in the picture the white boats are copies of the 45ft launches

Your boats look excellent; who needs 3d?
Best wishes

Re: Splash's Telford builds
I have just picked up a new toy to play with, I got it for the wife ( she actually believed me ) it's a Brother ScanNcut machine the principal is you first place the object you want to copy in the machine it scans it works out the shapes then you put card or in my case thin plastic sheets in and it cuts out the shapes.
I have just used it to cut out the complex flying bridge on the 1:600 HMS Warspite I'm building and I was surprised at how good it copied the shapes, in the image you can see the plans I used and the parts it cut out, I have only used very thin plastic to start with as I don't want to break it on my first try, so I'm going to stick the parts together to get the right thickness.
Thus will be great for card models at it will cut out a whole A4 sheet in on go.

I'm quite happy how the forward superstructure is turning out, once the top surfaces are painted Darby grey it should look OK.

Re: Splash's Telford builds
Cheers for your support guys and girls.
As time is pressing on HMS Southampton has returned to the slipway to start her painting, I'm going for the colours she wore during 1940 as I can't find any reference or images for 1941. As far as I can find out she was painted in grey/green & brown with possibly white or black ( reference say black but images show what looks like white or light grey?
