Great work John

You have made a super job of that old kit, John. Ever thought of adding a few Preiser Figures as deck hands etc?

I was just thinking figures as I was adding the railings -- it would give a sense of scale.
I'll have to go looking.

The photoetch railings are done. Many came out quite well, some not. I found stray fingers bumping & denting those already installed as I worked on adding new ones. In my final clean-up, I'll go back and see if I can straighten a few.





There is some glue smutz here & there. I somehow managed to break off half the foremast yard arm, you can see the white replacement that was painted shortly after the photo was taken.

Next is rigging and I have no plan at all. I think I am getting to the end of this project in my mind so it will be minimal and done a line or two at a time to avoid more breakage, etc.

This is a great build. The near finished work looks lovely. Indeed, she will sit well on any show table you wish to put her in. Well done!

The PE railings help a lot with the scale effect

Looking superb John!

The ladders and railings in the Atlantic Models PE set are definitely worth it.
The FROG kit provided length-fitted railings and instructions on how to bend them around corners, leaving magic chains.

Atlantic was wise enough to provide generic railing, and plenty of them, and let the modeler figure it out. In most cases the generic fit was spot on, but for the 4-6 corners I had to deal with, it was simple to bend them then fit a stray stanchion at the bend to take away the magic.

Where I made a mistake is between the cabin and the boat deck -- there are 3 posts on each side and I built all that before I did the railings and it became rather messy. I am not sure what the right approach is, but would have to involve thinning the inside of the posts to let the rail snuggle closer.

The only other problem was the PE ladders, specifically the 4 going from main deck to "pipe" deck. The pipes running along the side of that foul three of the ladders slightly. I thought I had it fixed but barely so in one case.
