USS Arizona BB-39 by gnomemeansgnome

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

USS Arizona BB-39 by gnomemeansgnome

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

Yep, this is the venerable bathtub battleship we all know and uh, love. Well I do anyway since this is a nostalgia/mojo restarter build for me. Straight outta the box except for a couple of missing deck guns that were replaced with scratchbuilt articles and that girder style signal yard on the back of the forward spotting top, made from bent guitar string and lycra thread. The stands were poached temporarily from a long stalled Airfix Tirpitz build to stand in for the kit pair, one of whom went on a walkabout. Never did get to the bottom of what species of seaplane those are but dummied them up in hopefully ballpark resemblance to navy yellow wings. Now maybe I got some gas in the tank for recovering my poor start to the year. Enjoy.

Cheers fellas, thanks. I know it looks sea grey or something but it is actually Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue under a coat of Smoke, which tries and somewhat succeeds as the actual scheme the ship wore the morning of December 7th.

That's looks really good, the decking has come out nicely as has the hull detail with the Tamiya Smoke 8-)
Best wishes

GNG,
the aircraft would be Curtiss Seagulls (bi-plane) but in 1941 there are photos of a ‘Vought Kingfisher’ being loaded onto the ‘Arizona’ (with dark blue wings).

Thanks, gentlemen. Yeah Tony I believe all the dreadnoughts of the Pacific Fleet would have had Kingfishers by this time but I suspect these mystery floatplanes are a mishmash of earlier machines from Vought or Berliner-Joyce. They certainly aren’t Seagulls, as the resemblance ends after both being float biplanes.

On one of the boxings of Hasegawa’s kit of the SOC Seagull, Arizona’s sister ship Pennsylvania is visible in the box-art background.

The aircraft pictured at the top of the page is from Arizona

Very nicely done, GMG, that is a proper menacing looking dreadnought! I couldn't help but noticing your Marshall combo in the background. Back in the day I used to play a Les Paul through a 1970's 100W JMP-1 half-stack. To be honest for the size of venues we played I'd have been much better off with the 50W version as I could've driven it better without risking blowing my head off but when you're young and in a rock band, there's no substitute for more watts :ha:
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.
