Here's something you might want to try on nautical subjects. I'm building Trumpeter's 1:144 Soryu Class sub. Nice kit, BTW, and its low parts count makes it a welcome change from the armour and aircraft I usually do!
Anyway, I wanted to simulate a grimy, salty line along the waterline, so I partially submerged the model in a plastic tub of water, and gently poured in a heavily-thinned mixture of dirty green and beige artist's oil paint. I then pushed the film of paint around with a paintbrush until it touched the sub on all sides, and carefully removed the model by pulling it straight up. This leaves, a nice, level line of sludge all around the hull at (I think) the right level.
I think the result looks promising enough, if a little overdone. Right now I'm waiting for it to dry, then I plan to remove the excess oil paint with a soft brush and some thinner. Wish me luck!

Interesting, and looking very effective
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Clever idea. Even at 144th scale, it's a large model.

That is an interesting technique, Canuck. Building nautical subjects is something I rarely do myself but I've also found they can make a nice change from my usual diet of aircraft and military vehicles (one of these days I'll try a civilian car, motorcycle or truck).

Nice idea, I must stick that technique in the back of my brain.
Great ideas.

Very clever. You even get a gradient effect.
