Revell Tribal class Destroyer.

Having picked up a copy of David Griffith's excellent book "Ship Models from Kits" I got the itch to build another ship and try out his excellent tips.

A visit to an excellent model shop in Poole Dorset turned up the Revell 1/720 scale set of the HMS Ark Royalwith a Tribal class Destroyer for only £10 so I thought these would make good cheap cannon fodder for my fumbling big hands.

Both kits look not bad for their age, they are basic and simple but build able, I plan on building the Destroyer first as the choice of colours gets me away from battleship grey.

Assembling the little Destroyer has highlighted the fit of these kits is not going to be a shake and bake experience more of a fit where if it touches experience :shock: as you can see from the first image the lighter colour is were I have used my home made filler all around the deck to hull join.

I have some spare PE railing that will be added so I have removed the over thick walls on the upper surfaces that will be replaced with the PE

A coat of White Primmer hasn't shown up any large problems :-D

Who would have thought that simply plating three strands of wire together would have produced such an effective small scale chain?

Nice! How did you create that plaited wire?

EDIT - I should have looked ahead: http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=15652;

I remember bungling this little kit together many years ago. You're certainly doing a much better job than I did and that chain looks terrifically effective. 8-)

Looking good! I don't think I've got the patience or the eyesight now for such small scale work; fair play to you for working at 1/600! I'm sticking with 1/350 for maritime stuff :grin:

I fully agree with you, working in 1/700 and 1/600 is just a tad too small for my likes as this kit is proving.

I quite like the 1:500 scale that Frog used and like you 1:350.

This build is a training build before I attempt a 1:350 scale Dreadnought :-D

Great work with this eyesight tester, Alan. I agree with the others, that scale chain is brilliant. Tribal Class destroyers are certainly handsome devils!

Built this set many years ago, apart from the odd scale Revell chase (1/720th) the Ark and Tribal were actually superior to the Airfix 1/600 scale offerings in detail.
Got another in the stash, just need to get the dedicated 1/720scale etch for the kit.
You're doing a great job on the Tribal so far, just make sure you get rid of the dual 4.7" guns in "X" position as by the time the camo you're using came in "X" position had a dual 4" AA mount with a different sheild and cut down mainmast to clear the "A" arcs.
I use magnifiers nowadays for my builds, don't need to make 1/350th anything due to eyesight, far too out of scale for my collection and no real improvement. If I want something big I build in 1/144scale or 1/72. As you may guess I'm no fan of 1/350 like many modellers.
