HMS Cossack

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

HMS Cossack

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

Yes, the classic 1:600 scale Airfix kit I picked up for $8 cdn, part of a cheapo job lot at the local IPMS show a couple of years ago. I have made better progress on that haul than almost any other I drag back here to the Nick Cave. Aside from converting it to a waterline model, no funny stuff other than the very basic stretched sprue rigging and flagstaffs. The less said about the build, the better. I don't think this was one of their better kits, but I bought it out of interest and with the original intent to see if it could be built as HMCS Haida instead. Way too much work involved and I wanted to keep it simple. I may pick away at it some more at some point. Mostly it was built to try and resuscitate my nearly non-existent modelbuilding mojo these days......

Here it is moored next the Scharnhorst which I built a few years ago and is also IPMS vendor room loot.

That looks a great result from that old warhorse of a kit. Nicely weather worn.

Nice, looks like it's been been plowing rough seas on a long tour.

Looks good, the finish looks worn but subtly so.

IIRC, I have or have seen something on that conversion but remember nothing of the details; I'll try to have a look around.

Your Cossack looks great; nicely weathered and the rigging is just enough to give the impression without cluttering it at such a tiny scale. Always a favourite ship of mine, after reading of the Altmark cutting out episode in the Victor comic many many years ago!
Best wishes

Thanks fellas. FAAMAN, I think your HMS Cossack is fab. I love these old Airfix Ship kits! Alan, all I did in essence was to prime every nook and cranny (well, every cranny anyways!) in flat black by brush, and then a few careful passes or three with a grey primer rattle can. These two measures helped to make the subject more three-dimensional in spite of the relative lack of surface detail. Details were picked out, the boot topping painted on and pennant number added after a coat of wax on the hull only. I kinda wish I had taped the pennant number decals to a sunbearing window to get the yellowing out, but ah whatever. Finally a little dab or dozen here and there and hopefully within reason of Tamiya Dark Brown to simulate rust, and a not too dark wash in flat black and thinner. After that, a darned good toot or two with dullcote, mostly to tame the sheen of the floorwax on the hull. I like my ships, naval or merchant marine, to be grubbied up a bit, but it is easy to overdo it and I was keen not to if I could avoid it. The same goes for much of the hardware I build, actually. Not always a huge fan of showroom looks. The sea is hard on this stuff anyway, is it not?

Your technique works really well in that scale, I never thought about pre shading small scale ships but you have proved it’s very effective.

Have you seen the PE set that Atlantic Models do for that kit it fiddly but really adds an extra dimension to the builds here is a link http://atlanticmodels.net/photo-etched% ... scale.html their PE is brilliant and fits perfectly.

Thanks Alan, and thanks for that PE set link. One day I may snatch that up and then a conversion to HMCS Haida might not seem to outlandish. That said my very limited experience with that medium has so far not been an unqualified success.

Good job  I built one years ago, but I have another in the stash to waterline as you have ;-)

I found "Commonwealth Tribals, Conversions from The Airfix HMS Cossack kits" on page 166 of the January 1967 Airfix Magazine.
It seems to be mostly post-war information and the drawing are tiny, but might be of use - HMCS Haida is covered..

I can scan and email it to you, if you would like.
