Scratch-built 1:600 Caronia

If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

Dirk, You still haven't told us which ship you are so keen to build a model of!

Incidentally I buy most plans from Plans 'n things on ebay. They have a very large range of ships' plans ...... a huge number being warships. Each one sets you back a few pounds .... but you're not likely to scratchbuild a ship in a few days ....... so you won't be buying a plan every other day.

Here's a pic of another one.... the Independence ..... and yes, the ship really was painted in that scheme for a few months!

Extremely impressive and beautiful ship models. Do you model in any other scale or just 1/600th.

Tremendous builds there. I cannot imagine the time and effort that these must have taken!
Very well done, and the paint scheme on the independence is brilliant.

The Independence is stunning. I assume you have to hand paint the artwork on the hull?

I don't do ships but even I can tell that there is some very good work indeed going on there.
Would ya like to learn to fly? Would ya? Would you like to see me try?

I'm sorry but I've only just seen your questions. Answers as follow:

1. I do sometimes build planes / cars / rockets / tanks ..... but only as a break from the ships. It gets to be a bit tiring building only one model a year .....so I build the others ... quickly ... as a change.

2. 1:600 is my preferred scale. I like to keep to the same scale as this builds a more interesting "fleet"

3. The independence has a hand painted sun and set of eyes. The stripes are all individual transfers. I sprayed transfer sheet in the required colours and cut strips to size. There must be well over a hundred individual strips to each side of the hull. When you add the windows etc there must be over 400 transfers on the model.

Matter of interest now many ships have you done in this scale. Excellent work, a year a ship I can understand that with the detail you put in to them. Off to evilbay to look for plans.

These are great. Love a liner, just lovely lines. I too build other subjects as breaks from ships - mostly to get away from all the masking and practicing/explore airbrush usage.

@ Garry:

Not all that many. In all I have some 40 ships but only 11 of them are scratchbuilt. I started the Michaelangelo last year .....still a long long way to go. Might finish it by next Christmas!
