If it goes on or under the wet stuff and doesn't fly, it's in here.

Scratch-built 1:600 Caronia

Post by Sailorman »

I was under the impression I had posted these photos of my latest scratchbuild but I couldn't find them anywhere .....must have been mistaken! Anyway, here they are now. Scale is 1:600 and hence matches the Airfix ships.

That looks to be at least 1/350! I can't fathom how you do those davits (or any of the rest of it for that matter) at 1/600.

Wow that is so cool.

How did you do the guard rails?

A couple of replies:

Each pair of davits are made up of 15 parts.
U shaped rod provides the main sliding members (2no)
40 thou plasitc card provides the short, outboard vertical members (2no)
Ditto to two inboard vertical members (2 no)
The upper arms are in etched brass by White Ensign. (2 parts per davit thus 4 parts to each pair of davits)
Plastic rod provides the linkage between the two sets (1 part)
Plastic rod locating "pegs" are glued into the vertical legs of each davit (once suitable holes have been drilled in) and glued into holes drilled into the deck. this provides a positive grip.

Tedious and time consuming .......

The guard rails are etched brass produced by Gold Medal Models.

You said this was scratch built? I would love to see a step-by-step on how this is done. I have at least one ship I want to buld but there is no kit for it. How you do this would be of great help to me.

WOW, that is amazing. I guess the first step is to ind the ships plans and then invest in evergreen styrene. I found the plans of the ship I want to build on EvilBay about a year ago. I guess that's a good place to start. Who do you get your plans from and are they expensive?
