Dirk's HMT Olympic in Battle Dress
I was toying with what to build for the Ships Group Build but even me with ADD and my constantly starting new kits I couldn't bring myself to start another ship right now. What I will do is return to my HMT Olympic build from 2007 and run it side by side with the current GB. So I'm what going to here is reintrodue to you all my HMT Olympic. Some of you may have sen this back on the old forum but I'm guessing it may be new to most.
With the outbreak of World War I, Liners were called into service by the British government to act as Troop Transports, Hospital Ships, Auxiliary Cruisers and even Commerce Raiders.
But for all their suitability, passenger liners were never intended to endure the rigors of sea warfare. As far as is known no liner has ever been constructed with amour plating, anti-torpedo bulges or any other structural features to afford them protection from attack.
The Liners best attribute to contribute to its well-being during war time was its speed. In addition to a liners speed the Admiralty investigated and implemented camouflage schemes. Dazzle as it became popularly known as called for ships to be painted in bright, contrasting colors, in strong geometric shapes, to make it difficult for a submarine to determine the ships bearing, speed and identity.
This project will be of the Olympic in one of I believe 3 “dazzle” color scheme of the war.
What makes this project difficult is the fact that there is very little information and photos to go by. Each ship had 2 dazzle patterns at a time. One for port and one for starboard. So when you find a photo on the web you have to try to then find the corresponding side.
I was able to find detailed drawings with color index for the "Type 19" scheme which was the Olympics first but not a lot of character in my opinion.
Back when I first started this build this color pallet didn't exist but now it does and its just in time.

Here we go. Of course there is no Olympic model kit so the next closest thing of course is the Titanic. For this build I will be using Revells 1/570 Titanic
Here is a close up of the hull. There is a nice amount of detail

Don't forget to open up all the windows on the forward half of the Promenade deck. On the Olympic, these are the same size over the entire length of the deck.
WIP Hasegawa 1/72 Yak-3, Hasegawa 1/72 Polikarpov I-16 Type 24, Hasegawa 1/72 J2M3 Raiden, Hasegawa 1/72 Mosquito NF.2, Airfix 1/48 Mosquito NF.30

Re: Dirk's HMT Olympic in Battle Dress
Yeah I missed that early on and the build is at a point where I'm not going to do it now. I do however have a plan where I will try and hide the forward section of the Promenade deck the best I can.VMA131Marine wrote:Don't forget to open up all the windows on the forward half of the Promenade deck. Re: Dirk's HMT Olympic in Battle Dress
I would like to try that someday but not on this one. Most likely a Titanic or Mauritania model.bromo wrote:You like an easy build dont you are you going to glaze the port holes and add some interior lighting.

Thanks Graham. It's looking pretty spiffy so far. I just hope I can pull it off.

Re: Dirk's HMT Olympic in Battle Dress
Ok, it took a lot of work, and rework but its finally at an accetable point. Not perfict but close enough for this project.
Time to lay some paint. I started by painting the entire hull white and then applied the hull red. After that dried I started applying the dazzle
Some touch up is needed but over all I'm excited
