Sign-up and Chat

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

A continuation of the initial 'Defiant SKGB' thread from GB Chat that, if you remember, culminated a rather lengthy culling process.

Here sign-up for the 'Airfix Defiant SKGB', state your entry, chat with others who are joining the GB.

I'm going to borrow a few intro comments from MerlinJones, who did the spade work to get us to this point, as a way of intro ....

"So the modellers have voted and the modellers have chosen the venerable Defiant as the subject of a Single Kit GB. This is definitely a kit with issues, although said issues are so well known that the Internet is brimming with a whole world of solutions to address those issues. This Group Build will obviously serve to illustrate at least some of those issues and I'd expect at least one kit to be built solely out of the box ... and it'll still look like a Defiant!"

Additionally, because of its service as day fighter, night fighter, trainer, target tug, search/rescue, etc, a good selection of variants and colorful marking options are available ....

So .... off we go, and have fun !!

Although I will be starting late (approx the 3rd or 4th or October) I will definitely be in this with my entry as follows:

Airfix Defiant
Valiant Wings replacement nose
Airwaves Etched brass
Falcon canopies
RAFDEC decals for an ASR aircraft
True Details wheels

and some work on the various odd shapes with plasticard and rod

Airfix Defiant
Valiant Wings replacement nose

Other than that it will be OOB using the spares box for interior parts & plastic card to correct what I think my skill levels are up to. ;-)

I like the look of the all black night fighter JT T so I will go with that one but the decals seem quite thick. :???:

Still, I will not worry about that until the end. I need to get the parts to fit first - it looks like a bit of a pig.

Like OT I will be in with the Valiant Wings nose. But I have to finish my Tiger meet F4 before I start.

The very best of luck to you all. It will be interesting to see how you all approach this old dawg and what you manage to do with it! I have every faith, of course, that a wonderful brace of lovely Defiants will emerge at the end

One of the things I love about the Single Kit Group Builds is all the possible variants that get done of the same aircraft. This one is no different. There are lots of variants of this aircraft and I'm hoping a lot of them will be covered.

For the record I'm going to be doing one of the most common ones, a Night Fighter. Sure its a lack of creativity on my part but along with the cool look of the paint scheme it happens to be the air craft that I have decals for.

I look forward to seeing what everyone has to add to this build. Here are some cool color profiles

Some great colour schemes there Dirk. I do like the black night fighters with red lettering but unfortunately I don't have any appropriate decals. Maybe I could make some.

Dirk, remember that NF isn't black, but rather "Night" or RDM2A. You'd do well to look for a good paint for aproper representation - I use either Mr Kit (acrylic) or White Ensign (enamel). I'm sure someone has a good tip to "lighten" other more blackish paints appropriately.

Also, some units fiddled with the blue of the wing roundel to get them to stand out a bit more -- might give you something interesting. I have details/examples, if you are interested.

I'm going for the mkII night fighter and the ASR version.
I have already built a target tug so don't need to go there again, having built a few of these before and with plans to build a few more eventually I originally made my own resin nose and radiator from my own patterns and moulds and will use parts taken from those to modify the kit.

Good luck all. I don't have one of the kits so will be watching.

Earlier this year I followed this little build over on Britmodeller and seeing what he was able to accomplish was nothing short of awesome.

The finished build is here.

Can I join.

I've not touched a model in about a year and I'm looking for something to kick start me again.

I'll do the NF.1 straight from the box.

If it's got wings and a propeller, that's good enough for me.

Cheers

Dave

It's the 29th, GMT, so start whacking away ....

Looks like we have 4 NF, 1 DF, and 2 ASR, with 2-3 more unstated .... pretty much covers it except for the poor TT, maybe I'll try to get one in, it was what I originally wanted to do ....
