Re: OT the Defiant virgin
I have been plugging away at this one.
The guns have given me no end of trouble being far too wide at the base where they join. I had to trim a fair bit of plastic off before they lined up with the gaps in the turret.
Eventually I got them in the turret, stuck them in place with PVA glue & attached the turret base. I have been test fitting this all the way through the build with not issues...until now
Somehow it would no longer fit so I had to trim the turret housing just enough - too much & it would of ended inside the fuselage! Anyway, the next thing I knew it went clunk, straight in. Quite a snug fit.
The canopy is a really bad fit & will require plenty of PVA to fill the gaps (yes gaps). It only touches in a couple of places.
Then I was just carrying the Daffy over to the modelling workbench for a quick update photo, tripped over a startled cat & launched the plane on its maiden flight.
Remarkably I only broke one of the U\C legs. They don't make kits like this anymore!
So this is where I am up to:
As you can see from the drawings the turret supplied by Airfix is way too small!
Next up a few bits of repair work, another coat of black and she will be ready for decals. Speaking of the decals I am going with JTT even though I think the codes should be off-white rather than the bright white decals. Some weathering should tone them down.
Still need to find some better prop blades too.

O_T,
Despite the dimensional errors you refer to, she still looks good under that black camo.

Martin

Re: OT the Defiant virgin
I have fitted the U\C & doors after the Daffy took an unscheduled trip down a flight of stairs! (I am sure there is a maiden flight joke in there somewhere? )
Incredibly no serious damage was done so I thought I should push on with the build whilst I have something to work with.
Time to apply the decals:
The decals are as thick as fudge & I had to use plenty of MicroSol to settle them down. They look ok this morning.
Although one of the wing roundals is slightly out of register.
I believe that the code letters should be an off-white or even grey like this:
Maybe some weathering is called for. Tonight will be dedicated to the framework on the glazing.

Re: OT the Defiant virgin
It ended up looking like a Defiant.
I need to sort that saggy wire.
A really enjoyable build, the VW nose in a real help in correcting this kit. Replacing the rudder is a must too. I will apply lessons learned here to building a day fighter - one day.

Just read through this OT - those improvements really made a difference. Nice work.

Nice work.
I had the opposite with my decals. They were very thin and the codes kept breaking up.
