Re: The Sea Shall Not Have Them - Tom's ASR Defiant
Thanks guys , work has slowed a little this week with me being on lates at work but I have managed to get two coats of Sky onto the Defiant:
I've also cut out the vac-canopies that Im using, this is a comparison with the kit parts:
I've given them a dunk in Klear and they are currently drying on some kitchen paper. The Valiant Wings conversion suggests that one should use the kit blades for the propellor but they are a little bland in shape, other quarters have suggested that a Spitfire three-blader should work just as well. As a stroke of luck I happen to have a spare prop from an Airfix MkI/II kit that im building as a pre-war example and it has kindly donated to the cause.
Spitfire prop on the left and kits on the right:
I have also decided that I need to do something to emphasise that this is an ASR machine and not just a Defiant in pretty colours so I dug in the spares and pulled out this pair of Hurricane drop-tanks that will act as M type dinghys on underwing stores carriers:
They only look a bit like what they're representing but as long as no-one picks the model up and looks too closely I think they'll pass muster.
Regards
Tom

Re: The Sea Shall Not Have Them - Tom's ASR Defiant
Oooo a double update tonight!
Decided I couldnt leave well enough alone so carried on working on various sub-assemblies.
First up is the prop, now with spitfire blades in place:
Then I turned my attention to the turret guns, I splashed out on a set of Master brass barrels and this is how they compare to the kit pieces, note also the drilled out breech blocks:
And after slotting them into place, a 0.5 drill bit as used and the barrels are a tight push fit, I have sealed with CA just for piece of mind:
Finally David (Lancfan) has kindly provided me with a photograph and plan view of the ASR pylon for a Defiant, my plan to just wang a set of Hurri tanks on there just ain't gonna fly after seeing them but the tanks and pylons are serving as the base for the mods:
Very Heath Robinson but the general effect is there.
Regards
Tom

Those guns are a bit lovely aren't they.

Looking good. I gather you'll cut the vac-turret slots wider apart than the kit so those nifty guns look right ??

Im using the Falcon set John and they are meant as straight replacements for the kit parts, width errors and all. As I haven't modified my rear fairing I don't think the narrow turret will be quite as noticeable.jRatz wrote:Looking good. Just a bit, I'd love to use them for all my Brit aircraft but not at £5.80 plus P+P per set of 4JamesPerrin wrote:Those guns are a bit lovely aren't they.
Hopefully they'll all come together as a cohesive whole that might bear a passing resemblance to a BP DefiantOld_Tonto wrote:The guns, turret & ASR kit all look awsome. Very cool.
