Great vid Splash - pity I can't understand a word of it. Nevertheless, those Kamov designs are truly fascinating helos and I look forward to whatever version you go with.

I like those contra-rotating rotors. Always nice to see.
The tail-assembly looks fiddly. Good luck with that.

Re: Splash's Kamov Ka-15
I'm leaning towards the 15M or the 15HX but the HeliBaby is tempting.
What do you think?

Re: Splash's Kamov Ka-15
You're spoilt for choice there Splash, all of those are very characterful looking helos. If I had to pick two it would be the M and the Heli Baby. But seeing as I've so far proved to be incapable of finishing even one model in a GB I would go for the M on the basis that I've never built a chopper on floats.

Re: Splash's Kamov Ka-15
I'm going for the Ka-15m because its so different and will look cool with floats.
This is my first attempt at an Amodel build they look like typical short run kits, basic detail, and lots of flash. I can see a lot of scratch building might be required on the rotor heads.

Very cool subject, and a nice scheme.
Is that a milk churn on the side of it? Or mass biscuit dunker?
Cheers

Well, a dipping sonar, I presume. So the biscuit dunker is not too far off.

Good luck with the build! And be careful of the weak plastic.. I'm already at three broken parts on my Kaskr-1

Re: Splash's Kamov Ka-15
Yes that indeed looks like your typical short run kit, the basics look to be there and the rest is up to the builder. However, what would a dipping sonar be doing on the side of an Aeroflot machine? mmmmm...............

Looking forward to this one. I keep looking at these kits and then passing them over, I don't know why as there are some very colourful and unique models to be had from these kits.

Re: Splash's Kamov Ka-15
It's quoted as being dipping sonar but I have read an article that said, The ASW version the Ka-15 was fitted with two RGB-N sonobuoys or with the SPARU-55 automatic airborne receiver unit. One of such helicopters dropped sonobuoys in the designated part of a sea, the other received information from them about the presence or absence of a submarine. Once a submarine was detected, a third Ka-15 equipped with the OPB-1R sight and two 50-kg depth charges entered service.AndrewR wrote:It's a stethoscope for whales Jim...Jagewa wrote:Very cool subject, and a nice scheme.

I have seen video footage of a Ka-15 flying at about 60 knots with the milk churn hanging about 100 feet below the a/c, I personally can't see how the little a/c could carry active dunking sonar and the power supply it would need, but I could see the milk churn being the weight on the end of a H/F arial that was towed around the sky picking up the weak sonobuoy signals.
I have now started the kit and it is, as I expected a kit that will require every part cleaned up, this is not a kit for a beginner . The bonus is you don't need much shelf space for it, as you can see when I put it up against my Wessex it is tiny.

Thanks for the heads up about the plastic.mightymikeD wrote:Good luck with the build! And be careful of the weak plastic.. I'm already at three broken parts on my Kaskr-1
So far it's been OK the plastic is quite soft and forgiving, having said that it might all change when I start work on the small parts.
