OT's Hack & Conversion ****Epic Fail****
All ready to begin later today. I have my kits ready, tons of spares & a big pile of decals to sort through.
I have yet to settle on a scheme but I intend to build one pretty much OOB except for the colours. I am leaning towards this very nice black example.
My second build will take advantage of the kits over sized radiators and will hopefully manifest itself into a griffon engined Mk 14 or 18 - depending on decals.

Oooh, a Griffon conversion. I'll be watching that!

Re: OT's Hack & Convertion
I am not holding out too much hope, just an experiment really. It will take advantage of the Heller kits big radiators & the new nose will solve the under nose 'pigeon-chest' issue.Martin R wrote:Oooh, a Griffon conversion. I'll be watching that!

I read an article about it in an old magazine. Apparently it was the only way to get a griffon Spit years ago.

Re: OT's Hack & Convertion
It is fairly straightforward, this is an FR.18 I did using the Heller 16 and the Airfix 19.

That is very cool. Is there a build thread for it?lancfan wrote:It is fairly straightforward, this is an FR.18 I did using the Heller 16 and the Airfix 19.

Re: OT's Hack & Convertion
Started work on the Mk 16 jobby.
I have started painting the interior which I must say is rather nice for a kit of this age. It's a shame that the Airfix Mk IX is not as well fitted out.
As you can see I have found a nice resin seat, metal prop & vac canopy.
I also found a resin chin & exhaust stubs which I may use - time permitting.

Re: OT's Hack & Convertion
A small issue has arisen with my second build - it's a bit broke.
I was planning to chop the tail off anyway but this will complicate things.

It's just a three part fuselage, carry on .

Re: OT's Hack & Convertion
nothing to worry about, just glue the fuselage halves together as normal and then glue the broken tail to the fuselage, tape them up securely as you go and leave the whole to dry.

Re: OT's Hack & Convertion
Got a little more done on the black Spitfire.
I removed the radiators, still need to sand them down but if you only fix one thing on this kit that is it.
Now that is done I can get on with the office & get the wing together.
This is a wonderful lunchtime project.

Re: OT's Hack & Conversion
Let the butchery begin Time to crack on with the 'upgrade' to a Griffon engined Mk14.
Too late to turn back now!
And at the back end:
After a few minutes of hack & slay the dismembered parts are scattered about the tea tray come workbench.
After some sprue was used as additional bracing this Frankenstein Spitfire is together:
Not a bad fit at all but it will need a lot of filling & sanding. I also need to add the wing leading edge fuel tanks.
The raised lines of the Heller kit contrast sharply with the recessed lines from the academy kit.
The OOB build is coming along. I got the fuselage together & re-fitted the reduced radiators. I also blocked them off.
I still need to remove & replace the oil tank\chin before I fit the wing as it looks very wrong to me. I will have a go at building up the Packard-Merlin buldged engine cowl if I can get my hands on some Milliput.
The carpet monster seems to have eaten the nice resin seat I had stashed away for this build so I will use the kit part & tittyvate it with a cusion & harness.
More to follow.

Re: OT's Hack & Conversion
Made some progress on the Mk16.
I had a replacement resin chin from the spares box - no idea where it came from.
I was a little over zealous with the cut but a little filler will sort it. I then added the wings, a decent fit considering the age of the kit.
Next I applied some Revell Plasto to the engine cowling to try & create the 'bulge' of the Mk16 & late Mk9 which the kit sadly lacks.
So some sanding to do now. Then the canopy & primer.
