Splash's racing Spitfire ***finished***

Post by splash »

Hi Guys sorry for the late start, but it has given me the chance to see what you have all been up to.

I had intended to just build it straight out of the box but as others have commented the radiators are too deep so as I have just bought a new saw from Little Cars I thought lets have a go at cutting them off.

I'm impressed with the saw it gives a nice clean cut and was easy to use.

That's a nifty looking tool. What is it & where can I get one?

Sorry about the lack of updates, the kit has just flown together, I have sanded the surface smooth but have found it difficult working with the Silver plastic, it has the strange effect that when you rub the detail off it leaves a ghost image of the missing detail in the plastic. It was not until I gave it a coat of primer that I realised I had a bad joint behind the cockpit that will need filling.

I'm now in two minds what colours to do it in. the decals in the box for the camouflage version have dark green call signs that are I think totally wrong. But I'm not keen on the silver version.

Checking my stash I found a Revell 1/48 Spitfire XVI that comes in a nice green/grey with a yellow/black race number markings, so I might copy this.

Splash, a surviving spitfire 16, TE476 is kept in airworthy condition at the Fantasy of Flight museum in Florida and is finished as the same aircraft. The sqdn codes GE+D on this aircraft are painted in standard 'Sky' I tend to think that Heller got it wrong years ago and the mistake has been passed on ever since.

Some progress, I have smoothed out all the panel lines and finally decided to paint it as SL718 from 612 Squadron when it entered in a post war air race as No 6, hence the yellow tail band and patches on the port upper and starboard lower wings.

Splash,

Swift progress and looking good! Lots more interesting things on your workbench, too.

I'm hoping to have a crack at the Airfix P-51 over the Christmas hols, too!

I have ordered some decals for the call sign markings, this will slow my build up a bit but today I plan to lay some more paint down to get it to the decal stage, fingers crossed.

Green and grey added just the light grey underside to add when the green dries.

Splash,

It's looking very nice, indeed. Those race markings add a splash of colour.

I had a bit of luck for a change, whilst putting the decals on my Sae Fury I realised that the spare decals left on the sheet has two 6 & two 9 of the right size for my spitfire so I have inverted the 9's and put them on as 6's, what do you think?

Cheers Martin.

I could not believe my luck when the fitted the yellow oblongs that I had painted on the wings, because they were just done by eyeball from the Revell plans. They are not quite the perfect shaped 6's but close enough for my taste :-D .
