Splash's Widgeon ***Finished***

Post by splash »

This will be a trip down memory lane building the Airfix Widgeon, it was a kit I built as a young boy back in the 60's and spent hours playing with it.

I picked up the kit from my LMS who had it on sale for £3 which I thought was a bargin.

I have been saved by the carpet monster who has just eaten a whole engine.

The fit of this kit is really bad and would cost me more in filler than the original kit cost. Whilst working on the wings I heard a ping indicating that one of the engines had gone AWOL from the clamp that trying to hold it together.

So I'm using this as an excuse to call it a non finisher.

I'm going to have a quick search of my stash to see if I can find something different to build.

I have an Airfix Walrus that will fit the bill.

Re: Splash's Widgeon ***Sorry Non Finisher***

After seeing what Paul and Barry have done with their Widgeons I thought it would be too defeatist to just give up after only losing one engine to the Carpet Monster, so this lunch time I have popped out to my LMS and picked up another Widgeon (still only £3) and will start again.

Looking on a positive note, I now know what the problems with the engine to wing fit is and will add some plastic spacers to widen the engine, this should reduce the step between the engine and the wing fairing.

With the spare body I will try and use it as a mould to crash mould a new windscreen, as Paul pointed out in his build the original is too small.

So back into the breach one more time.

With out a doubt it will  . never mind, at £3 its worth it for the Decals, you can never have enough decals with Royal Navy on :-D

Better luck this time Splash.

My screen was oversized, so perhaps one of yours might fit. :???:

So are mine the trouble is they are oversized in the wrong direction, they need to be made higher at the front.

As you can see from the photos the engines are a very bad fit and will need padding out with plastic card, I have super glued the transparancies in the spare body and filled the gaps around the windscreen, then rubbed it down, my cunning plan is to use this as a blank to plunge mould a new canopy.

An ingenious use of a spare fuselage there Splash, I'm genuinely surprised by how many people are building widgeons for this GB, I wonder what the correct name for a flock of them is?

Wikipedia says, "The American Wigeon is highly gregarious outside of the breeding season and will form large flocks" so a Flock of Widgeons it is then.

Things have suddenly taken a turn for the better, after polishing up the transparency to make a smooth master for the plunge mould it has turned out not to bad and I'm now thinking I might just go ahead and use it.

It's looking good Splash.

Now just the engines and the rather 'springy' undercarriage to sort out ;-)

I'm genuinely surprised that there aren't any Sunderlands in this GB.. despite Modelzone stacking vast quantities of the Italeri 1/72 (with phot-etch parts) in their stores..
