On the finishing straight and very nice it looks too. Just goes to show it's not how modern or not a kit is, it's what you do with it that counts!

Thanks Shaun :)

I agree, there's a lot of mileage in some of these old kits, which can turn out nicely with a little extra work.

Another one is the old Monogram 1/72 F-82 Twin Mustang.

Cheers

Thanks Dirk, that's my third Mustang this year. :)

Good job, Andrew. A real charmer.

And you get a lot more satisfaction out of the build when they come out as good as your's is looking. ;-)

Thanks for all your kind words. :)
I've put a coat of Matt varnish on, and I'm waiting until morning to see if I need to do another. The rudder was still looking a bit shiny in places :)
The decals seem to have bedded down nicely, with no silvering. I'll try and get some pictures posted tomorrow morning. We have 30 cm of snow forecast to fall in the next 12 hours or so, so I will not be going out! :)

Well, we've only had 20 cm or so of snow today, but there might be more coming overnight!

Image

In between childcare (no school!) and dealing with some issues from students, I did manage to take the foil off the canopy. Unfortunately there are some white bits visible underneath from the attempts to plug the gaps.

Image

I've decided not to try and "fix" this because I think I might make things worse. I added an aerial from stretched sprue and a pitot tube from bent wire.

If you look carefully in the photo below you can see the white furry dice in the cockpit on the starboard side. :-D

Image

I gave it a very pale wash to show up the panel lines very slightly and also to make sure that there were no large expanses of the same colour. These planes were worked very hard, and should look pretty beaten up - they would be operating from temporary airstrips in the beachhead area of Normandy.

Image

I didn't put the yellow leading edge recognition markings on either with decals or paint, because there are many photos of the II(AC) aircraft without them. Remember, they were worried about the enemy more than friendly fire!

Image

So we just need a bit of pastel exhaust marks and maybe some staining near the guns.

cheers

Yes, I'm pleased with it. The top of the cowling isn't as nice as I'd like and the canopy edges are a bit rough too, but for sheer fun to build, it's a top scorer :)

Looks good - nifty scheme. I was beginning to get anxious about the canopy masking not coming off :)

So was I, John

I need to get the cocktail stick out again and try and get the canopy framing looking better. It's okay from normal viewing distance.

Nice job, Andrew.

I have one in the stash and I might just have to give it a go in the New Year.

That looks really good Andrew, When these kits were current many years ago I always thought the Frog kit to be far more accurate than the original Airfix and Revell ones.
