Motley's Russian Hurricane IID **Finished**
Motley's Russian Hurricane IID **Finished**
Thought id start up this thread now. Im planning to do a quick Airfix Hurricane IIC but convert it to a IID with the 3D kits set and do it up as a Russian bird. Heres all the stuff i shall be using in my build.
Heres a close up of the 3D kits set, it does look lovely and ive heard good things about it from other forums.
This is the scheme i shall be using from a aftermarket sheet by AML Decals, not many decals on this scheme which is nice and should mean that stage of the build should be easy as the decals do look nice on the sheet.
Along with the decals AML Decals give you a resin pair of canons to convert a Hurricane to a IID but i think ill use the 3D kits one s they do look all round nicer
Hopefully ill have time for this build, the old mojo has been lacking abit recently but a good old Hurricane always gets me going again, just got to find the time to model now.

Excellent choice Tom.
I look forward to seeing the 3D-kits conversion. It looks fay better than the resin ones.

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
Made a start on this today after around a half hour i was at this stage with the cockpit pieces and sides of the plane all painted and ready to be put together. Im not going to add anything to the cockpit cause once the canopy is on and painted you cant see much in there anyways so not much point it doing it up.
First step in turning it in to a IID was the remove the cannon blisters from the wings as these were not on the IID wing. I just used my knife and careful scraped away the blisters. Here you can see one wing with the blisters removed and one as the kit comes.
After about an hour and half here is where i stood with everything buttoned up and ready to go with the main painting. I do love how these Hurricanes just fall together, now just got to focus on the painting and finishing off the last bits of details to turn it in to a IID. The main thing i need to do is fill the light gaps and the holes where the cannons are meant to be.
Thought id take a picture of what you get with the 3D kits conversion. You get two of these sprues which are beautifully molded and look lovely and detailed. Im thinking of doing mine with one cannon with the fairing on and one with it out to show off the detail. You also get a small detail sheet so you can do 3 different schemes.
Here is a 3D kits cannon compared to the resin cannon you get with the AML Decals. Not hard to work out which is better in my opinion,
So far its been a lovely build, hopefully will get abit more done in the morning. Hope to get the parts i need filled and the main painting started, and got to remember to put the Vokers Filter on as ive just noticed the scheme im doing has the chin filter one.
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
Thanks for showing the 3D-kits sprue. I was very impressed with the Rotol Spitfire set too. What are the colour schemes that go with the 3D-kits decals? Desert camo?
Cheers

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
The 3 schemes you get with the 3D kits set are 2 different desert machines, one with the nose art Our John and a green and grey camo scheme from the 1st Specialised Low Attack Instructors School. You only get the serials and nose art, for the roundels it says take them from the kit you are using which is easy enough.AndrewR wrote:Thanks for showing the 3D-kits sprue. Thanks for sharing Tom. First look at 3D sprues for me. This will be fun to watch.

Good project Tom and without question the 3-D cannons are the ones to go for. Seems to be a good value set at six quid - mind you, was that more than the Hurricane kit?

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
Havent had much time to work on this recently, due to the joys of working in a supermarket at christmas but i managed tio get a tad done this morning. Ive put the lights on to fill the holes in the wings but these will be painted over as the IID do not have landing lights and i also managed to fill the holes where the cannons go. Now thats done should be able to get abit of painting done in the next few days. Pictures will come once the painting happens
Quick question does anyone know what colour the IID cannons are?? thinking just paining them black and dry brushing it with silver or gunmetal.

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
The retail sector is tough on its workforce at this time of year Motley, so I bet you won't get much in the way of time off.
Is it the colour of the cannon barrels you are asking about? It might be the case that they are painted to match the way the camo falls, i.e. green if there's a green camo in the vicinity of the barrel and grey if there's grey camo in the vicinity of the barrel. Of course I could be talking a load of old cobblers, have you tried good old Google? Looking forward to your further pics anyway.

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
Hi tom, just had a look in the Squadron Signal 'Walk Around' book for the Hurricane...
Here's a few scans:
Sorry, no pics of a IID in Russian service - but looking at that last photo, it appears that the RAF, at least, left the barrel alone and only painted the fairing.
***Mods..
I avoided showing full-page scans, due to it being a commercial publication.
If single pics are also unacceptable, then my apologies, and please delete.

Gunmetal would be my choice, as any paint would be burnt off as soon as they were fired.

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
After looking at the photo I would use gunmetal with a hint of clear blue over the top to give that blued look often shown by metal gun parts - not too much blue though, it has to be kept subtle.

Re: Motley's Russian Hurricane IID
IT IS ALIVEE!!!
Finally managed to get some work done on this one again. No pictures as of yet but the painting has started with the underside and top sides of the hurricane being paintednin the correct colour, leaving me with a rather grey Hurricane. Next step is the camo and then on to the details
