Ta-Dah.......
For the first attempt at a new skill I am quite pleased with the outcome. Once again my bottom is giving me trouble:
Nothing that a rub-down and re-paint can't sort out.

Wow, that looks great Chip, quick rub down of the bottom and a touch up (oooeeer madam) and it will look fine I reckon.

Re: Chip's Soviet Spitfire
Repairs completed and home-made decals on:
With hindsight I should have painted white stars for the insignia to go on. Oh well, another lesson learnt.
Next step is to fit the undercarriage, and apply a bit of weathering. I also need to try and spread out the canopy a little as it currently sits too high when in the open position. Any advice would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Replace the canopy with a very wide Hobbyboss one?
Or a vacform?'

Or leave it closed, unfortunately.
Any effort to spread it is liable to get you a crack down the center ...
You have plenty of time to source an alternative, maybe a vac one, as Andrew suggests.

Re: Chip's Soviet Spitfire
Does the moveable part of the canopy sit correctly if the fixed rear part of the canopy isn't fitted on?
If so, then replace the fixed part with a bent strip of acetate packing material.
Cheers

Re: Chip's Soviet Spitfire
I'd go with Andrew's suggestion as well Chip. Either that or try and source a vac replacement. I've been there in the past trying to spread a canopy to fit, with inevitable results and I ended up having to find a replacement.

Re: Chip's Soviet Spitfire - Finished
Thanks for all the advice guys. As time was on my side to get a replacement, and having a few more Spitfires in the stash, I decided to do an experiment.
By placing the canopy part on a piece of tape (to hold it steady), and pressing down on it with a paintbrush handle, I was able to spread it apart slightly. I then warmed it up using a hairdryer for about 30 seconds, followed by blowing on it to cool it down again.
This resulted in the part holding it's new shape, and sitting better on the finished model:
I am quite pleased with the way that this has come out, and it has given me the chance to try out a few new skills, some successful and some not so.
Thanks to O.T. for suggesting this one, and here's to sitting back and watching the other builds progress.

Re: Chip's Soviet Spitfire
Great finish Chip and well done with the canopy, good bit of fathoming there with the heat - that's certainly better than the attempt I made on my Airfix Seafire that ended up in two pieces (thank goodness for Aeroclub at the time).
