mmD's Roden Albatros D 1

What did your Secret Santa send you this Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice? Did you get a Trumpeter 1/48 Lump of Coal, or a nice old Airfix classic? Your builds should be chronicled here, starting Decmber 25th (ho, ho, ho!) and lasting through January 31st. Admins: Brickie and Paul Bradley

mmD's Roden Albatros D 1

Post by mightymikeD »

I'm spending Christmas Day at a friend's so likely won't get a chance to get near here tomorrow so I've jumped the gun..

And all I can say is "WOW!..

Image

Simply put, it's a thing of beauty. Lovely, detailed moulding (the engines alone are worth the build) and loads of great schemes.. I can't wait to get stuck into this one. Hopefully I'll do it justice.

Many, many thanks, whoever was kind and thoughtful enough to send this. It's perfect

Happy Christmas to all!.

Of course, I've picked the most complex colour scheme and won't be using the skull!
I'm going to build this as Lt. Buttner's craft (not least because I'll have a plane that says "Bu" on the fuselage).. natural wood and green/grey.. a few wee camo spots too. It's not exactly lozenges of sworls but it'll be fun!

Here be the sprues..

Lots of unused parts , including an entire engine, pair of MGs, prop and struts.. so the spares box gets a little SS gift too!

Engine is a thing of beauty, It's had a coating of Hu27, dry-brushing, nasty, greasy wash and silvering to follow. Wee bit of flash on the parts (noticeably more on the unused ones) but nothing too drastic. Going to be building Lt. Buttner's kite, so natural wood finish to most of the fuselage. Going to practice the Hu110/Hu1322 Clear Orange method on some spare parts.

scheme is here http://www.wwiaviation.com/popup/Albatr ... -D391.html

Only potential snag I can see with this build is that some of the parts are tiny and fragile.. lucky I got a rather nice craft knife set for me birthday (Christmas Eve) so hopefully we'll avoid any aaaaarghs getting the parts off the sprue.

Love this kit.

The location points for the struts might not be very well defined, so be careful! :)
I have a few Roden kits in the build queue so I'm watching!

They seem OK.. have to tap a few holes into various parts for other fittings though...

You'll be watching my build as a how not to do it, right? :ha:

Assembling the rather lovely engine.. and will be using Flute's rather awesome post on achieving a "Grained" wood-effect.. it's here http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=4907

Pics of the motor when it's done.. lots of other prep work done too, so this will be looking like an aeroplane really soon.

That's a great kit, Mike. I have the same near to hand, along with some other Roden Albatros types.
Roden kits are fine, provided you take your time. They have a habit of lulling you into a false sense of security, before turning round and biting your bottom, if you're not careful.

Good plan on keeping all of those spare bits. From that habit, I was able to improve my Airfix camel.

"Taking your time" is the watchword(s) alright.. managed to get some of the more fragile bits of the engine off the sprue but still had a part break on me.. easily fixed though. The engine itself didn't want to join together until I did some serious trimming of ejector pin flash/removal of locating pins/filing of one half.. and then it went together beautifully.
I have had a Roden Austro Hungarian Oefflag in the stash for a while (and some AM Sworl decals) and love the look of it.. this kit is exhibiting the same sort of standard. I find that I'm paying lots of attention to each part of it, thus far, with a view to making it look as good as possible, even though I'm going to try some new (to me) techniques on it..
Good plan on keeping all of those spare bits. From that habit, I was able to improve my Airfix camel.
Yup.. that (unused) Roden engine is so many leaps and bounds ahead of the Revell or Airfix offreings.. ditto the MGs.. useful spares to have (as are all the excess decals.. I can see some cheap AF/RV Albatros' getting pimped!)
