mmD's Roden Albatros D 1

What did your Secret Santa send you this Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice? Did you get a Trumpeter 1/48 Lump of Coal, or a nice old Airfix classic? Your builds should be chronicled here, starting Decmber 25th (ho, ho, ho!) and lasting through January 31st. Admins: Brickie and Paul Bradley

OK, maybe no wings...

The instructions require a bit of drilling before assembly of the fuselage..

So, out with the trusty Pin Vice and 0.7 bit..

photo before cleanup of the holes, obviously.

Now got the interior parts in.. next step be Ye Olde Closin' Of Yon Fuselage

MJ was, as usual, right: this kit waited until the perfect moment to kick me in the behind.. fuselage fit, OK in dry-fitting, was awful with engine attached. Had to shave off the step inside both halves of the fuselage and reposition engine.. and go for it again. Fit is till pretty average. Some filler will be called for to eliminate seam lines.. I still adore this kit, though!

Actually it's a vulgar shortened version of a phrase that means "in filler we trust" :ha:

This is coming along nicely Mike. Right, I'm off to do some modelling myself.

It's got wiiiings!

Plus an engine that, sad to say, is mostly hidden.. but I know it's lovingly painted and there!

as you can no doubt see, a bit o' filler came into play.. all still good, though!

I'm so glad the bite on the bum didn't put you off!
I find kits such as these reward the modeller who spends a little modelling time on them.

not a chance!
It's such a gorgeous wee kit that any little bumps in the road are treated as such: minor inconveniences on the way to eventual glory.
You're exactly right that the time spent on fixing minor problems is hugely rewarding.. I've quite happily had the pin vice out for an airing, enlarging connection points that seem a little small, stuff I generally wouldn't do on a standard kit. This Roden job makes me want to be the best modeller I can be.
And that is undisputably a Good Thing.

Okey Dokey..

The fuselage is going on the back-burner till Saturday, to let that last coat of Hu110 get a nice, solid 48 hour cure before I attack it with watercolour pencils. I'm not going to attempt to draw individual grains in 1/72 but a general "graininess" effect before applying the Clear Orange.
If anyone has any last minute tips or warnings for this method, I'm all ears.

Some work on sub-assemblies and the upper wings to follow..

Any progress, Mike?
I'm curious as to which scheme you'll be going for. (Obviously, a 'woody' one, which means that I can add to the Gallery with a purple one!)

Mixed results.. I guess I need more practice at this. The watercolour pencil streaks, instead of smudging, became nasty little lumps and bits when the Clear Orange was applied.. the finish ended up looking really good in some places and really manky in others. I've sanded it down and am about to give it another coat. Pics when that dries.

The scheme is Buttner's craft: wood body, tan and green camo on the wings, green upper fuselage with "Spots", equally acne-fied linen rudder.

I was in a HS yesterday that has stacks of Roden kits at very attractive prices.. I think I'm going to go on a biplane spree.. (they also have that whacking great Staaken reduced due to a damaged box!)
