Paul has a Handasyde **FINISHED** 1/26/13

What did your Secret Santa send you this Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice? Did you get a Trumpeter 1/48 Lump of Coal, or a nice old Airfix classic? Your builds should be chronicled here, starting Decmber 25th (ho, ho, ho!) and lasting through January 31st. Admins: Brickie and Paul Bradley

C'est finite! Well, 99% complete - the PE wire-spoke wheels are still on the way, and probably won't arrive now until after the end of the build, so I've used the kit wheels in the interim.

Rigging was effected using Mr. Adams' Incredibly Useful Stretchy Thread, aka Aeroclub elastic thread. This has all sorts of advantages, but mainy it is stretchy, so can't be knocked loose, and it's very fine, for scale effect.

I did much of the work using a magnifier on my desk, as my eyesight isn't up to doing this 'freehand' any more. Here, you see the tail under glass:

...and the end results:

The thread is laid across the wings here - it was raised into place once all the lines were in place - another advantage of its strechiness.

After adding all the rigging around the undercart, this is what it looks like (sorry for the poor picture...)

Some small parts were added, including gluing the pilot, Mr. D. G. Gilmour, esq. in place, and it was finished.

More in the Gallery.

This was a fun build - certainly way off my usual beat, but very, very satisfying to complete. Many thanks to my Secret Santa (you know who you are!); this has given me the confidence to tackle the other Inpact/Lifelike kits on my stash - though the Avro Triplane might be the last to get done....! ;-)

Paul,

It's well out of my thematic area of interest, but even I can see that's a great finish. Well done! Be proud of that one!

Martin

Super-duper work Paul. For a monoplane it has a surprising amount of rigging. The decals have worked great and I never knew it was flown by Pink Floyd's lead guitarist :-D

Well, he does have his own collection of warbirds....but I don't think he was around in 1911.... ;-)

Thanks guys.

Incidentally, I have a spare set of the lower wing and rudder decals if anyone wants them for their kit.
