Italeri 1/48 Arado Ar 196 A **DONE**
First off a big thank you to Secret Santa. This is gonna be great! I feel humbled that someone has entrused me with a kit from their stash so I will try and do my best to do it justice. I'm delighted with the choice of kit and am really looking forward to tackling this one.
I think I'm going to do the Japanese scheme of this one but before I do anything I need to consult some paint conversion charts. I will either do a small amount tonight or start the kit proper tomorrow.
Before all that though I'm about to watch some of the 'World War II in Colour' boxset 'er indoors got me for Xmas!

Re: Italeri 1/48 Arado Ar 196 A
I've come across a minor stumbling block when it comes to the paints to use for the main colour scheme. I'm going for a German scheme and the colours Italeri recommend are 'Grun RLM 73 / ITA MM II - 2083 and Hellblau RLM 65 / ITA MM II - 2078'. The paint conversion charts I have found do not cover either of these colours in Humbrol / Tamiya / Revell. Does anyone know what is the closest I can get to in Humbrol?

Great! Thanks for that Andrew. What site did you use to come up with that? I couldn't find any that reference iModelKits.

I'm not high tech enough to have an iPhone so I still rely on the IPMS Stockholm colour charts - these have been the go-to place for references for years, but unfortunately aren't necessarily always up to date with the latest paints available.
http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorchart ... ermany.htm;
RLM 72 and 73 were the sea plane equivalents or RLM 70 and 71 for splinter camo on their fighters. I just went to Hannants Xtracolors when I needed 72 and 73 - cos that's what they say on the tin!
http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X222;
Hope that helps - I'm looking forward to seeing this one built mate.
Cheers
Al.

Andrew - that's a great app. I download the free lite version and it has a lot of very useful colour chart information.
Al - thanks for those links, the second one was of particular use.
Unfortunately my LMS (which is not really so 'L') was of no use to me. Tomorrow therefore I have decided to treat the family to a trip to the nearest 'big city' where I hope to be more successful.

Progress to date concentrates on the cockpit:
The fit of everything so far is pretty good. As this was mainly a recon aircraft there are plenty of camera film boxes which is a nice touch I think. The seatbelts are all decals which again is a nice addition to the kit.
Really enjoying this!

Good looking start mate. Looking forward to seeing this one progress. I have the Revell 1/32 Ar.196A in the stash somewhere - your build will inspire me to get it out (and probably look at it, sigh, and put it away again - far too many parts for my short attention span at the moment!).
Cheers

Re: Italeri 1/48 Arado Ar 196 A
Thanks again folks.
A 1/32 version! I'd like to see that one getting made!
This kit has 100 pieces, give or take one or two.
I have the cockpit put together and did a dry fit of it into the fusalage. Fits quite nicely.
I've also started work on a few other pieces so currently this is how things look.

I've been progressing nicely however I've not had much time to take pictures or post updates. The fusalge went together pretty well, just a little filler required underside.
Unfortunately the engine cowling was broken however this allowed me the opportunity to display part of the engine. More unfortunately stupidity got the better of me and I cut off the wrong section. So basically I ended up cutting the engine cowling into 3 parts and put back two of them with the aid of a little filler afterwards.
Upshot is:
