Bluesteel's SS Walrus ***FINISHED***

What did your Secret Santa send you this Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice? Did you get a Trumpeter 1/48 Lump of Coal, or a nice old Airfix classic? Your builds should be chronicled here, starting Decmber 25th (ho, ho, ho!) and lasting through January 31st. Admins: Brickie and Paul Bradley

Great work, Julian!

But I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of geodesic framing so far :ha:

Floats attached and fore/aft float rigging done, just the side rigs to do. Dry fitting the engine and lower wings. It doesn't matter if there's a hairline gap between lower wings and fuselage as they are designed to fold back. I'm half tempted to chop the top wings to show the same, but I think I'll just represent with a score mark.

Or this:

We pass this every time we drive to California; in fact, just passed it on Monday. There's a crased flying saucer just outside...

Anyhooo.....

Walrus is looking good there, Julian. What will you be rigging with?

I have made progress with the Walrus, engine rigged and mounted. Just the top wing to attach and finish rigging, then decals and that's it.

No photos at the moment  As the battery in my digital SLR has given up the ghost and I'm awaiting a new one to arrive in the post. Usually I just pop into town and pick up a new one from my local camera shop. Unfortunately that shop was a branch of Jessops, the chain that’s just gone bust. So I had to order from another source online and hope it arrives by the weekend.

Managed to squeeze one more photo out of my near dead camera battery (still waiting for the new one to arrive...).

Engine assembly completed, rigged then fitted. Footprint decals added to the lower wing top as they will be very difficult to apply once the top wing is attached.

Image

The theory now is I attach the bottom hal of the top wing first. Then drop the rigging threads through the holes to glue on the bottom wing. Pull taught and glue on the top. Finally closing with the top top wing half. Seemed like a good plan, but bound to be a glitch somewhere.

Already had a glitch trying to put the right angle on the engine as it skews where all the holes need to be on the top wing, and I managed to snap off one of the top engine struts during a dry fit exercise. Glued on again but now a bit dodgy.

Well I think I've fathomed the best method to rig the Airfix Walrus. It was quick, easy and actually made rigging a biplane a pleasure - as long as the top half of the upper wing fits properly that is...

Image

Tail surfaces, canopy then the remaining decals and I should have it finished by the deadline :)
