Splash's SS F4U-1D "Royal Navy" ***Finished***

What did your Secret Santa send you this Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice? Did you get a Trumpeter 1/48 Lump of Coal, or a nice old Airfix classic? Your builds should be chronicled here, starting Decmber 25th (ho, ho, ho!) and lasting through January 31st. Admins: Brickie and Paul Bradley

Splash's SS F4U-1D "Royal Navy" ***Finished***

Post by splash »

:party A very big thank you to my Secret Santa you know me so well, a new addition to my Fleet Air Arm subjects in the shape of the Hasagawa 1/72 F4U-1D Corsair in RN colours. :-D

I was very pleased when I opened the box as this is an a/c I have planned on building for a very long time, but have never gotten around to it, or even got one in my stash.

I'm also very lucky to have one of the best preserved examples of the F4U-1D only 6 miles down the road from here at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, how is that for luck?

First impressions, this looks a very nice kit, very fine raised surface detail with crisp moldings and no sign of any flash. The kit is made up of three spruce of thin blue plastic and one clear single peace molded canopy with markings for two a/c.

photos to follow when I have unpacked from my holiday. :-D

Regards

I have shaken off my head cold and got back to the build table.

This is a nice kit the part fit so far is excellent, having studied lots of images of the F4U's they had a hard life and tend to show a lot of silver showing through the blue along the leading edges of the wings and around panel lines.

I think I will try the salt method to replicate the hard wear.

Nice detail on the engine shame you won't see it.

I'm going to have a go at the all dark blue as its not that easy to pull off.

You would think that a single colour would be easy, but far from it, trying to get rid of the monotone look is quite difficult hence I think heavy wear might be the simple answer.
