Star Wars Death (nee Dearth) Trooper (cup topper)

Post by JamesPerrin »

You may have see kids with these on a large plastic cup at the cinema as part of the Rogue One promotions. We took our daughter to so Moana (excellent BTW) a couple of days ago and I pocketed this before she could claim it. There are 5 character to collect IIRC the heroine being the only non-baddie. This was the coolest by far and I thought I could improve on the minimalist painting (green dots on the helmet) even though it's all black.

It's cast in vinyl similar to Airfix's small soldiers. Detail is pretty good though the pose is rather stiff. I pulled it apart to make it easier to clean up and paint.

I then when around carefully trimming sanding and polishing away the prevalent seam line. I accidentally removed a strip of detail from the arm and replace with stretched sprue which I basically melted on with Mr Cement S.

Both the base and the figure coat a coat of Alclad Gloss Black primer, this would also form the final finish for the armour. the base got a sprayed Vallejo Metal Color Burnt Iron.

It was then basically a job of painting the under shirt, straps, and should pad various shade of very dark grey. Blue was added for the under shirt, grey for strapping and pads, brown for leather pouches. Shading and highlighting was keep to a minimum. Some touches of silver finished him off.

Here are a couple of shots under different lighting.

A fun couple of hours of work. Off to see the film tonight at last too!

Nice idea to spruce up this figure James. So, were you sitting in the cinema painting while everybody else watched the movie? ;-)

Yeah, but people got annoyed when I kept pausing the film to make reference notes.

Nice!

But to the question - what exactly does a Dearth Trooper do?

I blame my failing eyesight.

Enjoyed the film immensely btw , didn't quite sweep you along as Force Awakens but visually beautifully captured the period of New Hope.

And then she married the Dark Lord of the Galexy, Andrew Lloyd-Webber.
