Airfix Polish Lancer 1815 (54mm 1:32)
i picked this kit up cheap from a charity shop and decided to build it as part of the CBK SIG 2017 display.
I have not built figures for a long, long time, so this build is taking me out of my comfort zone.
I recall building this kit when it was first released and thought then that it was a little gem and having just started it again I can see why, the part fit is excellent and the detail for its age is brilliant.
I know nothing about horses, but to me the action pose looks like the horse is in full gallop and the Lancers body matches the action and is showing great promise let's hope the arms and head are as good as the rest so far.

I thought I would try and give the lancer more of an aggressive look so I have drilled open his mouth.

Cheers Syd.
In the past back in the 70's I always used enamels to paint my figures but now I have gone over to acyilcs I will have to change my techniques as acyilcs dry to quick and don't give you time to blend them on the model.
To paint the horse I have given it a coat of tamiya deck brown as the base coat, then using brown oil paint and lighter fluid, using washes to build up the colour leaving the darker shades in the muscles.

Best wishes

These are great kits, the poses, especially the horses, are excellent.
This one is coming along very well indeed.

Re: Airfix Polish Lancer 1815 (54mm 1:32)
Is there a benefit in using lighter fluid over say windsor and newton thinners (which is the bottle of "stuff" I have for thinning oil paints down with?)
My approach is: I thin the paint with the thinner and then paint that on etc, and if I want then to remove paint later on as it is drying, or if it has dried after a lapse of time, use a cotton-bud or a brush dipped in the thinner...
But I am interested in any other tips and techniques you have to share

His horse is looking good Splash. It seems to be a nicely moulded kit. Good, because I have one somewhere

The lighter fluid evaporates a lot quicker than other thinners giving you a quicker drying time.chrism wrote:Is there a benefit in using lighter fluid over say windsor and newton thinners (which is the bottle of "stuff" I have for thinning oil paints down with?)

Coming along nicely. Good to see you've found a decent approximation of horrible shade of pink Polish Crimson

At least I can blame you for the shade of pink in use

Well, in that case, thanks for testing "Pink Horror" in the field. A test scrap can only tell you so much, and these pictures confirm it does the job on an actual figure.splash wrote:At least I can blame you for the shade of pink in use
