Re: The Black Watch
Assembly took place basically in the sequence illustrated but interspersed with detail painting. I used lead foil for the straps and fixed them with cyanoacrylate.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Re: The Black Watch
Having done my share of tartan in my time, I can say that you've done a great job there Ratch. There is a kind of formula for doing tartan based on weavers pattern sticks that look a bit like a very wide medal ribbon and you expand the pattern vertically then repeat on the horizontal plane. I tried to find a pattern stick when I saw your intention to build this guy but I'm sorry to say I couldn't find one for you. Turns out you didn't need it anyway

Its not perfect by any stretch but I think its a fair representation As I've just acquired another of these, I may make that one from another Highland regiment

Re: The Black Watch
One thing that I found useful in doing the thin, light coloured stripes in tartan is Microscale coloured line decals. I initially bought them for building up tartan bands on 1/48 aircraft but found that the very thinnest size of stripe works well on 1/32 figures too. The trickiest part is tucking the decal into the pleats at the back but the effect is worth the effort, better than my previous method of applying the paint with the sharp edge of a scalpel blade that had been drawn through a paint loaded brush.
I usually start with the vertical lines and only start the horizontal ones when the vertical ones are set
