Cheap 1/72 oil drums.

Post by splash »

I’m experimenting making some rough shaped oil drums look better by covering them in tissue and coating them in pva glue.

I have used three bought drums to give the illusion that all the drums under the cover are the same.

What do you think, will it work?

You could use one of the 'real' drums pushed into some milliput to make a relief stamp to add the rim and filler cap detail to your fake drums. But frankly if covering them with a tarp the plain cylinders will do very well.

James I like your idea, I might need more, so I will give it a try.

I left the barrels on the radiator for an hour to allow the PVA to set and then gave it a coat of green paint.

I think with a bit of dry brushing and an oil wash this might just work.

Very good no-one would ever know you're a cheap skate ;-)

James you have got me there. :ha: :ha: :ha:

I have three stock answers.
  • 1. The shop only had one packet of drums @ £5 for 10 drums.
    2. The shop had lots of drums, but I’m a cheap Skate and spent the £5 I saved on another kit.
    3. I enjoy scratch building.
But the truth is number 2, I begrudged paying for the drums and I now have seven left and an extra kit in my stash.

I'm happy with the end result, about two hours work in total.

Looks great - in most situations, a tarpaulin would be too rigid to show much of the underlying detail of the covered drums so great solution for both the model and the wallet...

Splash, I can't say that I blame you. £5 for 10 drums in 1/72nd scale seems a bit steep to me (or maybe I'm a cheapskate too).

I notice you formed the drums out of Milliput or it's equivalent, and a very fine and effective job you've made of it too, but I was wondering if a quicker and easier result could be achieved by cutting the "dummy" barrels from a length of plastic rod or thick sprue.

Hi Dazzled.

You are right, I thought about using wood dowling, but as I had some very, very, very old Milliput that had started to go hard and crumbly, I used that instead (it's the cheap skate in me).
