Tristan the Triceratops Tutorial......

Post by Allan31 »

Started with the old Airfix kit, I think I paid 1 US dollar from a vendor...

Image

Built out of the box it looks to me like "Bovine Cow" and I wanted something more like "Charging Rhino"...

Image

To get the look I was after I started cutting and hacking up limbs and sticking them back together with blue tack in different poses until I started seeing something I liked. I then glued them together with cyano super-glue and filled the voids with sheet styrene.

It was about now I had my epiphany with Milliput, wonderful stuff. I copied the skin texture surrounding the surgery into the Milliput and while I was at it, added a bit of angst to his brow...

And then a coat of Tamiya fine primer to see where we stood...

I was going to mount him on a plain wood base but I decided to do something different. I used some light-weight Spackle to shape some ground and while wet, put in some of Tristans foot prints. I then painted it all and added the water in the stream with 5 minute epoxy.

My better half Su and I found some plastic ferns at the craft store. I cut them apart, painted, then re-assembled to what I wanted.

Tristan was painted with RAF colors. White on his belly, then Sky type "S", then Dark Green stripes and some leather spots.

Image

A coat of Future and an oil wash to bring out the texture of his skin. I gave him gold eyes to shine and a pink tongue for a shot of color. I then put everybody together...

I have never done anything like this before, was huge fun. Now I'm looking for the T-Rex !!!

Fantastic Allan. I think the way you have modified his stance and the base you have made really make this. Look forward to seeing the T-Rex!

I'm even more impressed than I was before, now I've seen the work gone in to remodelling it.

It looks great thanks for sharing, do you realise the stream you modelled could now be the grand canyon?

That is just superb - I love the dynamic Rhino-pose. And the gold eyes really add a brilliant touch, not to mention the beautifully executed "camo" pattern. I fear that for the T Rex, though, you may have to use your imagination on your picture reference rather more - the closest analogue is supposed to be a charging chicken!
