Airfix Stalingrad Battlefront - COMPLETE

Post by Ian »

I appear to have volunteered myself to rebuild the first CBKs I built. Well done me!
The first kits I built came as part of the Airfix Stalingrad German Attack Forces set.
http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h ... w&dur=3918;

I was only 6 or 7 when I got this bought for me by Nanna and Grandad. I remember clearly sitting at their dining table (neatly covered with lots of newspaper) and playing building the Panzer IV and the -109. I used Grandads glue and paints that he used for his model railway.
The Panzer was painted grey and I tried to glue lichen to it. I remember it came off at a later date and it left green patches in the grey, which I thought looked cool! Grandad said that my -109 looked more like the ones he saw than the picture on the box did. At the time I was very,very proud. I did put some paint on the base, some black, grey and brick but the soldiers never got touched.
Painting aside, I lost count how many times the Germans advanced across that piece of plastic! Happy memories.

As that base is not available unless you pay a fortune on Ebay (not an option) I ordered the Cottage Street Scene from Amera. http://amera.co.uk/product.php?range=s;

I already have the -109 but I'll need to get the PzKpfwIV. The little Ians have some German infantry so I'll get the whole lot built, painted and stuck down. Looking forward to this!

Some progress and some pictures!

So this is the set I am trying to recreate.

The base arrived from Amera and I have painted it already. I should have taken a photo before painting but I was just so excited to get started on it I forgot....

It's pretty much where I want it to be although I may add some more detail.
The -109 has been started, just.....

And that's where I am at the moment.

Nice choice and nice painting of the base Ian, looking forward to seeing you re-create the whole set.

I seem to remember having the Pontoon Bridge set when I was young, that got blown up many a time I can tell you... AH memories....

Ian, looks great, and hope would be OK to share on our facebook site when finished? People love to see what can be done with our bases. James, if you want to see the base before painting, here it is on our site with the rest of the range, hope useful http://www.amera.co.uk/product.php?range=s; . also a new Airfix bases page.

A quick progress report.

Firstly, this is the aircraft I am going to re-create.
Image
With one slight difference, mine will be black 13 instead of black 12 - that's just how the decal bank worked out for me.

Here's where I am currently.
Image

And a home-made prop-blur as it's going to be in-flight.
Image

I've also dug out the German Infantry and had a bit of a play around with them and this is the set up I am going with.
Image

Image

Ignore the Saracen, that's just there as I don't have the PzKpfz IV yet......
And, of course the infantry need painting.

Not sure whether to remove the Jerries from their bases and fix them in place. I'll give that some more thought.....

I reckon it would look better if you did. (You know you want to)

I think it rather depends on the Classic effect you want with it. I suspect the original Airfix Battlefront sets were aimed at the young wargammer, so leaving the figure bases in place is entirely appropriate. But if you want an exquisite diorama, which is where I think you are heading, then removal would look better. Either way, it's an excellent and nostalgic build so far :)

A bit of progress. The infantry are painted!

They've had a coulpe of coats of Klear to protect the paintwork. They'll have a coat of matt before being stuck down onto the base. And I am leaving them on their bases. But I will cover them. The -109 is also coming along. Almost time to mess up the mottling.
Here's what it all looks like at the moment.

Getting there slowly but surely. Next mission is to buy the PzKpfz IV!
