This one I remember from being around aged 10 and lived in my sock draw for a while. The instructions have you paint the fuselage halves white first and then apply the cheat lines over the windows. A little punch tool removes the decal film from the windows. Whence the strips of window glazing can be inserted and the fuselage closed up. The say the least I will not be following this process and will glaze the windows with PVA once the decals have been applied over a complete and painted model.

Image

I was missing one of the cargo doors and had to replace with card. Most of what has gone on so far is fettling and filling. There is nothing inside bar a bulkhead behind the cockpit area. This was painted black, I didn't bother doing anything to the cabin as I determined even paint wouldn't been seen.

Image

Fettling the fuselage slots for the engines make them line up with the stubs much better.

Image

Yes the rear stairs does work!

Nice start James, I've often been tempted by airliner models but have never gotten round to building one.

Regards

Tom

BTW I could have glued the tailplane on but this would have restricted access to the engine stubs which do need a fill and sand.

Nice James, I have "Big Orange" underway, just waiting for the sun to bleach the decals.

Very nice progress there James, it was also the first jet airliner I ever flew on, and the same airline.

They look OK, what you see is the protective waxed paper.

Sometimes no matter how much you convince yourself you've got some modification correct as soon as you do it you realise you've made a booboo!

The wing fences on the Airfix kit are in the wrong position for production aircraft. Looking at photos which were all in profile more or less I convinced myself that the correct position was aligned with inner flap actuators. Wrong, as soon as I did it I had a bad feeling and looked again and then realised I had some plans in the Aeroplane Database article on the 1-11. For the record they should be halfway between the two inner most actuators.

Image

Filled my shame with shims of card including the leading edge lights which are another hangover from the prototype origins of the kit. Rough shapes were cut for the actual wing fences and I'll sand them to shape in situ.

After more sanding and filling it was a relief to find the cockpit window was a good snug fit after squaring up the opening. A few weeks later I was able masking it and get it primered. First grey to cover up the filler, trying to do this with white primer is a thankless task. Then the white primer and finally a couple or three coats of appliance white.

Image

Now just got to work out how to mask it up so that it matches decal cheat line!

This model required a lot of masking and much of it quite tricky. The grey underside need to follow the cheat lines down the side of the fuselage and under the nose. For this I traced a paper template from the decals and reduced the bottom edge by 2mm. I then tape this to the model and marked the edge and masked the white upper to this line. I use Light Aircraft Grey as it looked the closest match in my selection of paints.

Image

This was then followed by a lot more masking for the NMF leading edges and engines. I used Alcad Al and then over sprayed some dull Al on the engines after masking off a few panels. Not technically accurate but added some interest.

I lightening some dark blue with grey (in fact used black and white paint) to try and match the decals but didn't go far enough, however it does seem closer to the Caladonian colours than the pale decals.

Image

I could then finally pull off all the masking. At this stage the model didn't look great, the surface finish is far from my best and the would have benefited from rubbing the primer layers done, if I had the time.

Late one night I decide to go for it and get the decals on. Though thick they were easy to handle and went down well using Micro Sol&Set. The cheat lines come in two parts, the rear is slightly wider than the front part annoyingly and didn't fit correctly round the nacelle mounts which require a little snip. A couple of judicious slices in the decal helps it conform to the nose as well - it did show that my paper mask worked everywhere apart from under the nose where the grey has left a significant gap to the decal and will need touching up. The model however is transformed by the decals and despite it short comings does look pretty good now.

Very smart, James.

A BCal 1-11 was the first airliner in which I rode, from Glasgow to Southampton back in the very early '70's....one day, I'll build a model of it.
