Knock-out Dropper!

Post by Narayan »

Greetings!

Welcome to my B-17.

I shall attempt to do some justice to a B-17F, the Knock-out Dropper. This is a Revell 1/72 kit. I'm near the end of my Secret Santa GB so it will not get my full attention just yet. Also I want to do a bit of research on the aircraft first aswell.

For now then here is the boxart.

This one should be a good one. Is this the old mold B17 or the new one?. either way it'll makea nice Fort. Looking forward to seeing this one getting built.

All the best.

I'm not sure what you mean by new Greg. The new Revell is a G model or were you referring to an older new release? Sorry don't mean to be confusing....

It's the old mold. And the same one I shall be building (but in a different guise).

The first thing I did with this kit was to check the fit of the fusalage. It wasn't great. After a good bit of sanding I got it in reasonable shape but it remains to be seen how well this is going together.

So far I have been mainly painting small parts and the interior.

How about this for a bit of flash!

One of the jobs I'm not too keen on is canopies. In this case I got them out of the way early.

Image

I didn't realise how basic this kit was. I'm an OOB builder but would like try out some after market stuff but on this occassion I don't have time to source and order anything. Next time maybe. In the meantime I gave the pilot and co-pilot some seat belts. Shame they've got nothing to actually fly the plane with!

That's all for now.

Old kits like this can be frustrating with their lack of detail but then again they can act as a blank canvas for some good old fashion scratch building. At least that's my feeling with the old MPC B-24 I've been working on

You live and learn Dirk! If there wasn't a time limit on it maybe I would have got some after market parts. Maybe if the kit turns out ok I'll get another one and get some after market stuff as a trial run for future builds.

There has been much cutting of flash and general sanding so far. That has got me to this stage:

Dry fitting has gone together ok however there will be filling and sanding required. Quite a bit I think.

I built this kit a few years ago and enjoyed doing so, it's not a great kit to build but there are no major problems to watch out for. Regarding after market stuff for this kit, I wouldn't bother tarting up the interior if I was building this kit again as you really can't see much inside once the fuselage halves have been glued together.

While its fun to do all that work I agree not much will ever be seen. I went crazy on the interior of old 666 and none of can be seen

I never bother modelling stuff that can't be seen, life's too short and I take long enough over builds anyway! Is this a former Matchbox moulding Narayan? apart from the 1/76th tanks, I'm never too sure what is and isn't MB with Revell. Nevertheless, with a bit of care I'm sure a decent Fortress can be built from it. I prefer the look of F model over the G - no chin turret spoiling the lines of the nose.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Work is the curse of the modelling classes!
