lancfans' Hawker Typhoon ***Finished***

Post by lancfan »

I will build the Academy Hawker Typhoon kit, the roundels and codes will be replaced by more realistic decals and the stripes will be discarded and painted on but otherwise it will be almost OOB as this kit should almost build itself.

I've built 2 of these. They are good kits. You shouldn't have any issues with it

Looks like a good kit, dont blame you for changing the decals on this one though. Must say i do love that box art

David,

As others have already said, it's an easy build oob. You may wish to reduce the length of the gear legs a bit and add some length to the main gear doors, though.

Martin

Looks like a decent kit, looking forward to comparing it with mine to see what else I am missing.

The parts were washed and the fuselage/cockpit were pre-painted last night, I have intended to build a small series of Typhoons for some time and have a couple of Academy Typhoons in the stash to make a start. The Academy kit is really rather good, the only fault I can see (apart from the usual decal colour/registration problem is that although it includes both airscrews it does not include the later Tempest type tailplane and this will need to be cut from plastic card as a copy of the Academy Tempest tailplane, were I about to build a larger number of Typhoons & Tempests I would probably surrender the Tempest kit to the spares box but as my planned theme will not run to that many models I would prefer to keep the kit to build. The cockpit is now assembled and the fuselage halves are ready to be joined together, when I painted the cockpit I have run an experiment I have thought about for a little while now and that is to paint the cockpit using three different shades of colour to create the impression of depth and size and I think it has worked, though I won't really know until the fuselage is buttoned up. The picture below shows the halves ready to go together with a close up of the cockpit parts.

Here the fuselage is joined together as are the wing halves.

The wings are now attached to the fuselage, the fit of the parts was perfect with neither trimming nor filling needed.

The next step will be to make plastic card copies of the Academy Tempest tailplanes and fit them to the model.

Nice paintwork on the cockpit. I use that shade variation technique too. :)

The Typhoon now has its plasti-cloned Tempest tailplane and is almost ready for paint.

Chip, yes I will add landing lights next before fitting the light covers and painting the underside.

I don't know what it is about the typhoon. It's not my favorite aircraft but I love building them. I want to try my hand at a Tempest soon.

David,

Excellent progress.

Remember, if you're doing a rocket equipped 'phoon, then either one or possibly both of the landing lights were likely covered by metal plates as it was figured that they'd be damaged by rocket exhaust anyway.

Martin
