Can't say Paul, the decals were made for the Italeri kit which is a more recent tool- as to which kit is wrong or whether they are equally adrift in opposite ways I wouldn't like to say. The Airfix kit has a couple of minor faults which I have corrected here but even built OOB it will still look like a Whirlwind. As to the decals, they perfectly fitted the other models I have built so far using them.

The Whirlwind is now finished, there were a couple of minor faults with the kit but these were easily corrected and with a little extra scratched detailing it looks really quite good, the Model Alliance decals set it off well and it will stand perfectly alongside the other Ark Royal aircraft I have so far built.

To recap then, the cockpit was slightly cleaned up following pictures of preserved early whirlwinds, the nose was re-detailed and the nosewheels re-positioned, the mainwheels were replaced with better ones found in the spares box and a step was made from copper wire, finishing off with a new set of decals.

Great result David! That scheme suits the Whirlwind.

Have one of these in the stash...I wonder if its blitzable?

If you build it OOB I would say yes.

Thanks splash, this kit dates back to 1966 and will have problems minor ones yes but I would like to see a re-tool as The Westland/sikorsky helicopters are relevent on both sides of the atlantic and this could be another subject that Airfix can excel in.

I think it actually goes back as far as 1956 David. I have a bagged kit with BEA markings!
Great build though, I'm saving mine for an extra rainy day!

David,
Whirlwind came out really splendidly. I must say it does not look like an Airfix kit anymore.
