lancfan's Republican Tupolev SB-2 *** FINISHED ***

Post by lancfan »

This is a Novo boxing of the venerable Frog kit, to make this a little bit different I will use decals from an old Esci decal sheet for an aircraft of 5 sqdn, 24th B.G. Spanish Republican AF, 1938.
The box and sprue shot.

Have had computer problems which were solved with a full reinstall but cannot download needed upgrades to fully function until next Wednesday, in order to finish on time I must continue without pictures until then when I will edit them in.

work has started by scratching a simplified but accurate cockpit before buttoning up the fuselage.

To begin work on this model the interior needed some amount of work to meet modern standards, plans and photographs of the full-size found on the internet have been used to base the new details using plastic card, stretched sprue, foil and parts from the spares box. These are now done and the fuselage is now joined up.

The cockpit has been detailed and is ready for painting.

With the cockpit and interior painted the fuselage halves were now ready to be joined together.

When the glue had dried and the joints were cleaned up the decking behind the cockpit and under the canopy was cut away, reduced and replaced to allow the kit canopy to be attached in the open position.

The wings have been cleaned up and miliput wheel well detail has been added following pictures of a surviving example of the type. The wing at the top of the picture is finished and ready to fit, the trailing edge has been cleaned up, the flaps have been engraved and finally the aileron has been extended with plastic card. The lower wing is still open to display the Miliput details.

Nice bit of scratch work going on! Who needs lots of expensive resin bits...
Really like the Miliput wheelwell idea.

Cheers MDT, these early kits can be improved enormously with a few odds and ends from the spares box.
The wings and tailplanes are now glued down, when this has dried the wing/fuselage joints will be filled and sanded down and the rudder and elevators will be glued down. when that has dried basic painting can begin.

Good luck with the Esci decals! tried some on a Bv141 and no way could I make them stick without nailing them on. (Resorted to cheating and using some of a Me110)

It took the equivalent of a full month's data allowance to update the system and replace the past five years- worth of MS updates but everything is working as it should do once again.

The airframe is now complete and all joints have been filled where needed. The underside has been painted in light blue/grey.
